Scope mounts for 12 mm Dovetail

General description:

Dovetail is a special platform on rifle's receiver, which enables installment of various mounts for various rifles. This unique design is notched onto the rifle's receiver, barrel or slide. The most common and recognisable is 11 mm dovetail design. 12 mm dovetail is primarily designed on break barrel rifles. For example: Steyr Duett, Blaser B750, Bettinsoli rifles, Fair Rizzini, Fair Combi, Fair SLX 800, Antonio Zoli and of course many more others. Dovetails are designed with several different widths. Most common are: 11 mm, 12 mm, 13.5 mm, 14.5 mm, 16.5 mm, 18 mm and 19 mm. It's also very interesting to note that most break barrel rifles feature 12 mm dovetail with a recoil grove.

Physical properties and dimensions:

For a better hold on the rifle, upper side of the dovetail is wider than lower side. Dovetail dimensions are measured at the upper side, which is wider, in our case 12 mm. Generally, the dovetail design offers a possiblity of mount installment without screws going into the receiver. Scope mounts simply clamp on the Dovetail, with sufficient force so there is no movement during recoil. Additionally, all 12 mm dovetails are designed with a recoil lug, which offers even better resistance against recoil stop. Dovetail slopes are at an angle of 30 degrees. For a more clear understanding, please see the attached image below. Dovetail design on Break Barrel rifles is short, which means that only rear pointed cantilever mounts are suitable for installment.

Fixed mounting options:

Fixed ring mounts - One-Piece:

For 12 mm dovetail, Fixed One-Piece ring mounts are manufactured either from aluminium or steel. Additionally, they are always availiable as two part design. Which means that the base and rings are separated from one another. These mounts are very light, appealing and elegant.

Fixed scope rail mounts – One-Piece:

These mounts are manufactured either from aluminium or steel. They are availiable as two part design. Which means that the base and rings are separated from one another. They can be made from a single metal piece.

Detachable Mounting options

When talking about Detachable Mounting options, this means these mounts are removable without tools or other instruments, additionally you can remove them simply with the use of bare hands. Usually, these mounts don't offer full repeatability. These mounting options offer great advantage in terms of transport. Riflescope and rifle can be transported individually. When reattaching the scope on the rifle, point of impact shifts up to 10 cm on 100 m. Detachable Mounting options for 12 mm Dovetail are almost identical as Fixed Mounts. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Detachable Ring mounts:

Detachable Rings mounts are designed with simple metal levers, which are used for quick remove from the rifle. These mounts straightforwardly clamp on the 12 mm Dovetail. Final position of the levers can usually be switched without the change of the clamping force on the Dovetail. This offers a posibillity to adjust the position of the levers for a better visual appeal (both levers pointing in the same direction), once the mount is positioned and fixed on the 12 mm Dovetail. Additionally, these mounts are designed with recoil groove and recoil lug. Some Detachable Ring Mounts for example EAW Mounts, offer windage adjustment. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Detachable scope rail mounts:

Detachable Scope Rail mounts are composed of two-parts. Additionally, these mounts are designed with recoil groove and recoil log. Lower part of the mount clamps on the Dovetail, while the upper part clamps on scope rail. There are four different Scope Rail mounts available. Which are: LM rail, Zeiss ZM/VM rail, Swarovski SR rail and S&B Convex rail. Ordinarily, they are designed with windage adjustment incorporated in their design and are commonly more expensive. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Repeatable detachable mounts

Repeatable mounts are the most sophisticated mounts available and their main purpose is the removal of the telescopic sight from the rifle and mount it back again without the need of zeroing it all over. Repeatable detachable mounts are basically the same as detachable ring or scope rail mounts, with a difference regarding mounting mechanism. Repeatable detachable mounts are designed with a precise clamping mechanism, which requires identical hand clamping force for every attachment. Additionally, the same position of the mount is a guarantee. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Mounting bases:

Picatinny rails:

The Picatinny rail is on a good way of becoming a global standard for mounting since it was invented in 1995. Developed on the Weaver template, the biggest advantage of the Picatinny rail is the usage across its entire length, unlike Weaver which has predesignated slots for mounting, limiting its usability and versatility. Ease of use and interchangeability are also its assets. Picatinny has slots evenly placed, namely exactly 5.23 mm one from the other and 3 mm deep. Because of this, the mounting is identical on all firearms using the Picatinny standard. Picatinny rails are usually available with 0 MOA or 20 MOA inclinations. Picatinny rail can accommodate all types of mounts, also those designed for Weaver standard. Full size mounts of this type are designed for mounting of modern optics for example thermal or digital.

Adapters:

Adapters offer difference of height and mounting solutions. For example, upper side of the adapter has a Picatinny rail installed, while bottom side attaches to Dovetail additionally, it also raises mounting surface. Adapters for 12 mm Dovetail are small, short and are therefore perfect for Red Dot Sights usage. Note that Adapters for 12 mm Dovetail are not designed to be used for riflescopes.

RedDot mounting options:

Docter Sight mounts

The Docter Sight is a reflex sight with an array of application options. It is ideal for shotguns and for use on driven hunts. It can also be used on handguns, rifles and various other platforms. There are three availiable Docter sight mounting solutions. Which are: Repeatable, Fixed and Detachable. We should mention that Detachable Docter sights mounts require a new zeroing everytime you reattach it to the rifle. Repeatable mounts hold a constant zero. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Aimpoint Micro mounts

Aimpoint Micro is a tube dot sight for military use but is also gaining in popularity on the civil market. There are two types of models: the H models are designed for hunters, while the T models are designed for military users. There are three availiable Aimpoint Micro mounting solutions. Which are: Repeatable, Fixed and Detachable. We should mention that Detachable Aimpoint Micro mounts require a new zeroing everytime you reattach it to the rifle. Repetable mounts hold a constant zero. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Zeiss Compact Point mounts

Zeiss Compact Point is a contemporary Red Dot Reflex sight ideally designed for driven hunts. Due to it's small, rigid and compact design, it's very appropriate and usable for competition and sport shooting. Zeiss Compact Point can be mounted on shotguns, handguns and rifles. This small, lightweight but robust optical device is availiable with two different versatile mounting options. A) Standard mounting, for Picatinny and Weaver mounting rails. B) Zeiss plate, a universal mounting option for various rifles. There are three availiable Zeiss Compact Point mounting solutions. Which are: Repeatable, Fixed and Detachable. We should mention that Detachable Zeiss Compact Point mounts require a new zeroing everytime you reattach it to the rifle. Repetable mounts hold a constant zero. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.
