The “Super Wide” version of the Vixen Ascot has an optical system that has been specifically designed to produce the widest field of view possible on a 10x binocular.
Thus with these binoculars, you not only get a good level of reach and image detail from the 10x power but at 8.5 deg (148m wide at 1000 meters), the field of view is incredibly wide.
For astronomy, this aids orientation and targeting and enables you to observe more of the milky way or even entire clusters and constellations at once without having to pan the view about. On earth, you are better able to scan wide open areas looking for objects of interest and at closer ranges, it enables you to more easily lock onto and then follow fast moving wildlife.
The large 50mm objectives and fully multi-coated optical system ensure that a high level of light gets captured and is then also transmitted onto your eyes for bright, high-quality views, even in very low light situations.
The close focus distance on these Vixen binoculars is also relatively long and so whilst a great binocular for astronomy and long distance hunting or wildlife observation, these will not make a great choice for observing things like butterflies from very close distances.
Note that this wide field optical design has meant that the eye-relief has had to be reduced. So whilst the 7mm is probably fine for most users, if you need to wear glasses this will most probably not be sufficient to ensure that you are able to take in the full view without black rings forming on the periphery of the image. Thus if you do wear glasses, the 18mm you get with the 8x42 Ascot may make that model a better solution for your requirements.
Vixen's Ascot Binocular Series consists of a selection of traditional looking, but very ergonomic Porro prism shaped instruments. With a definite focus on astronomy, the wide selection of sizes and magnifications as well as many other features like fully multi-coated optics, wide field of view and good eye relief also put the Ascot series forward as a great choice in a wide range of terrestrial uses as well.
