Bushnell NatureView 8x40 Backyard Birder Details

With a wide field of view and a reasonably generous 5mm exit-pupil, the 8x40 arrangement on this particular 8x40 NatureView porro prism binocular makes it an ideal low-cost option for those interested in observing birds and other small wildlife in their back gardens or local parks. To keep costs to a minimum Bushnell have done away with some features that they deem not critical for these particular uses. For example, these are not waterproof and thus also not fog-proof. The optics are multi-coated instead of fully multi-coated and they have fold-down eyecups rather than the twist-up ones of the other more expensive models within this series.
Although not suitable for extreme close distance study of things like butterflies, the 4.3m minimum close focus distance should be perfectly fine for observing birds on your feeder or in a nearby bush.

About Bushnell NatureView Binoculars

A mid-level offering from Bushnell and as their name suggests the NatureView series is intended for general outdoor uses, but in particular, they have a number of models that will appeal to birders and larger wildlife observers. NatureView binoculars are available in both roof and Porro prism options, with each supplied in a range of popular size and magnification configurations. Thus you should be able to find the ideal model to suit your personal tastes and requirements.

Important Features

All NatureView binoculars feature a tough rubber armour, that protects the optics inside the chassis through shock absorption and at the same time provide you with a high grip surface to hold onto even in wet conditions.
These binoculars use large centrally positioned focus wheels that are easy to reach and allow for more precise focal adjustments. A diopter adjuster is integrated into an eyepiece so they can be tuned to compliment your particular eyesight. The central hinge adjusts to match the ocular lenses to the distance between your eyes and they also include twist-up eyecups, which permit you to alter the distance of your eyes to the ocular lens ensuring you get the full field of view.
Most models are O-ring sealed and filled with dry Nitrogen gas and thus are both fog and waterproof. However there are a few that are not, so if this is important to you, be sure to check the specifications of the specific model you are interested in. Roof prism versions are tripod adaptable.

Optical Properties

All NatureView binoculars incorporate lead-free glass into their optical pathway that is far more environmentally friendly than many alternatives from other brands.
Using a special chemical that has anti-reflection properties, the optics on most models are fully multi-coated. This improves the amount of light that is collected and then passed through the system for brighter, better quality views.
Be they "roof" or "porro" in design, most models within the NatureView series are fitted with prisms made from high-quality BaK-4 optical glass.
