With six separate models arranged into three different size categories and with a choice of either 8x, 10x or 12x powers, the Athlon Talos series has a model that caters for the requirements of most users and their activities. In terms of their features, optical components and coatings used, the Talos looks to fill the space between Athlon’s entry-level and mid-range instruments and offers a good performance to price ratio for those on a tighter budget.
All Athlon Talos binoculars in the series sport a standard single bridge body shape made from a lightweight composite housing. On top of the housing, the durable rubber-armor performs a number of tasks. It adds a layer of protection, improves grip levels and makes for a less shiny, more camouflaged exterior than exposed metal or plastic.The main housing is o-ring sealed and air-tight which not only ensures that the Talos is waterproof, but prevents dust and other small particles from entry. The air inside the housing is also extracted and replaced with Argon gas in the factory. This moistureless gas prevents any of the internal optical surfaces from fogging or misting up. Focusing is simple and accurate with the large centrally located wheel and you can easily compensate for any differences in your eyes vision using the diopter adjuster positioned on the right eye-piece. With multi-position twist-up eyecups, most models in this series have ample eye-relief to allow for perfect customisation no matter if you wear glasses or not.
Understandably at this price level, these Talos binoculars do not utilise all the optical components and features as that you find on the higher end Athlon ranges. But they do cover the bases with the most important ones and thus present you with a good quality image but at a reduced cost.To start with, the optical system is fully multi-coated which is great as it tells us all glass surfaces throughout the entire pathway has multiple layers of anti-reflection coatings applied to them. The result is a brighter, better quality image compared to those which only have these coatings on the exterior lens surfaces. BaK-4 glass is used for the roof prisms which is good as is the fact that they have been treated with multiple layers of a material that corrects the phenomenon of phase shift which affects all roof prisms. These phase correction coatings enable a greater image resolution and more accurate color reproduction.
Along with the binocular, Athlon includes a neck strap, soft carry case, objective lens covers, rain guard and a lens cleaning cloth in the box.
