Lyman No.2 Tang Sight for Uberti 1873 Product description

  • All-steel construction: A steel tang sight stands up well to regular use on a lever-action rifle and keeps the sight picture consistent under field handling and repeated adjustment.
  • Adjustable aperture sight: The rear peep design helps center the eye naturally, making it easier to pick up the front sight cleanly for more precise shooting than a basic open rear sight.
  • Height index marks: Marked elevation settings make it easier to return to a known zero or move between distances with more confidence during target work and cowboy-action style shooting.
  • .800 maximum elevation: The tall adjustment range gives the sight useful reach for longer-distance shooting where a standard barrel sight may run out of elevation.
  • Two included apertures: The supplied hunting and target apertures let the sight adapt to faster field shooting or a finer aiming picture for deliberate target use.

About the No. 2 Series

Lyman No. 2 tang sights are traditional rear sights built for shooters who want the handling of a classic rifle with a more precise aiming system than a standard notch sight. In Lyman’s sight lineup, the No. 2 series sits firmly in the heritage category: it keeps the look and operating principles of period tang sights while adding the repeatability needed for modern recreational shooting, cowboy-action competition, and general target use. The series is especially well suited to lever-action rifles and similar classic platforms where a receiver-mounted peep sight improves sight radius without changing the character of the firearm.

Across the range, the defining traits are all-steel construction, a folding tang-mounted layout, and an aperture-based sight picture that naturally helps the eye center the front sight. That combination gives a cleaner, more deliberate aiming reference than many open rear sights, particularly when shooting at small targets or stretching distance. Depending on the rifle model, No. 2 sights are configured with model-specific bases and practical elevation adjustment, making them a sensible choice for shooters who value traditional rifle sights, durable materials, and a classic mechanical design that still works well in the field.

About the Lyman No.2 Tang Sight for Uberti 1873

The Lyman No.2 Tang Sight for Uberti 1873 is made for shooters who want to bring a classic Uberti 1873 lever-action rifle closer to the handling and sighting style associated with traditional tang-mounted peep sights. Mounted at the tang, it places the rear aperture closer to the shooter’s eye than a barrel-mounted rear sight, which helps create a more refined sight picture and makes the front sight easier to define. In practical use, that means steadier alignment for deliberate shots on the range and a more precise hold when shooting at longer distances.

This model uses an adjustable steel rear sight with height index marks on the aperture post, so elevation changes are easier to track and repeat. Lyman also gives it a .800 maximum elevation, which is useful for shooters who want more room for distance work than a conventional rear sight usually provides. The sight includes both a .093 quick-sighting hunting aperture and a .040 Large Disk Target Aperture. The larger opening favors faster target acquisition and a brighter view, while the smaller target aperture supports a finer aiming reference for slower, more exact shooting. This makes the sight suitable for both general field use and organized cowboy-style or target shooting.

The construction is all steel with a black finish, matching the traditional character of the rifle while offering the durability expected from a working iron sight. It is supplied without a front sight, allowing the shooter to pair it with an existing or preferred front-sight setup. Lyman also notes that some rifles may require drilling and tapping for the forward mounting screw, an important point for fitment planning on reproduction rifles.

About Lyman

The Lyman Gun Sight Company began in 1878 in Middlefield, Connecticut, and the brand remains closely associated with traditional sighting systems and shooting equipment. Lyman Products is headquartered in Middletown, Connecticut, and its catalog covers both shooting accessories and reloading tools. Alongside gun sights, the company makes reloading dies, presses, and bullet-casting equipment, giving it a long-standing place in the broader shooting and handloading market.

For iron sights such as this one, Lyman’s background is especially relevant because its tang and receiver sights continue to use principles from William Lyman’s original sight design. That continuity helps explain why the brand remains a familiar name among shooters who prefer classic rifle sights, period-style lever-action accessories, and practical mechanical designs that have stayed in use for generations.

Will I need to change the front sight what would you recommend if this needs to be done. All information will be gratefully received I’m struggling with the buckhorn sight. Thank you Bill

by William

Dear Sir!

Unfortunately, we do not have verified information regarding whether the Lyman No.2 Tang Sight for Uberti 1873 will interfere with the hammer during cycling, whether additional modifications may be required, or whether the front sight will need to be changed.

In this case, we would recommend consulting an experienced gunsmith familiar with Uberti 1873 rifles. They will be able to assess the installation requirements and advise on any necessary front sight changes.
