Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40

• Versatile 4-12x magnification: the zoom range covers fast shots at moderate distance and gives enough top-end magnification for more deliberate placement farther out, making it well suited to general hunting rifles and rimfire setups.
• 40 mm objective lens: this objective size keeps the scope trim and easy to mount while still gathering enough light for dawn and dusk use, when game is often most active.
• Second focal plane reticle: the reticle stays visually consistent through the zoom range, so the sight picture remains uncluttered and easy to read at higher magnification.
• Capped finger-click turrets: the capped design protects zero during transport and field carry, while the click-adjustable turrets still allow straightforward sight-in without adding bulk.
• Waterproof, fogproof, shockproof construction: the sealed housing is built for changing weather, rough handling, and recoil, helping the scope stay dependable across hunting seasons.

About the Leupold VX-Freedom Series

The Leupold VX-Freedom series was introduced in 2018 as a budget-conscious line of hunting riflescopes that still carries the company’s core design priorities: practical field performance, straightforward controls, and dependable construction. Within Leupold’s lineup, VX-Freedom sits as an accessible option for hunters and recreational shooters who want a proven optic without moving into heavier or more specialized long-range models.

A defining part of the series is Leupold’s Twilight Light Management System, which is intended to control glare and support visibility in low-light conditions. In practical use, that matters most during the first and last minutes of legal shooting light, when contrast and target definition become more important than raw magnification. The series also spans a wide range of configurations for rimfire, muzzleloader, and centerfire firearms, with different reticle options and selected models that use the Custom Dial System. Across the family, the emphasis stays on compact proportions, familiar hunting-oriented reticles, and a build that is waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof for regular field use.

About the Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40

The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40 is a classic all-round hunting riflescope built around a useful balance of reach, size, and simplicity. Its 4-12x magnification range gives enough flexibility for stalking, woodland edges, open-field shots, and rimfire use at varying distances. At the lower end, it remains manageable for quicker target acquisition, while the higher end helps place shots more precisely when the distance stretches out.

The scope uses a 40.00 mm objective lens and Leupold’s fully multicoated optical system to deliver a bright, practical image without making the riflescope overly large. Combined with the series’ low-light emphasis, this makes the model a sensible fit for hunters who spend time in changing light rather than on a static range. The SFP reticle layout keeps the reticle appearance constant as magnification changes, which many hunters prefer because the aiming point remains easy to see and does not become too fine at low power.

Mechanically, this model stays focused on reliability in the field. The capped turrets protect the settings from accidental movement while moving through brush or carrying the rifle in a vehicle or scabbard. With 80.00 MOA of elevation and windage adjustment, there is ample room for normal zeroing tasks. The fast-focus eyepiece helps the shooter bring the reticle into sharp focus quickly, and the fixed parallax setup keeps operation simple, with no side controls to manage when a shot opportunity appears suddenly. A 1-inch tube, modest 371.00 g weight, and 317.00 mm overall length further support a trim, easy-handling rifle package.

About Leupold

Leupold & Volpel was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1907 by Fred Leupold and Adam Volpel. The company later introduced its first riflescope, the Plainsman in 1947, helping establish Leupold as a dedicated maker of American sport optics. In 1962, it introduced the Duplex reticle, a design that became widely recognized for practical hunting use.

Today, Leupold & Stevens, Inc. is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, where the company moved its manufacturing plant and headquarters in 1968. It remains family-owned and focuses on optics for hunting, shooting, and outdoor use. Its range includes VX-series hunting riflescopes, Mark-series tactical riflescopes, red dot sights, binoculars, spotting scopes, rangefinders, and thermal optics. That long specialization in field and shooting optics is reflected in products that prioritize practical handling, durable construction, and clear, purpose-built reticle designs.
