Kowa TSN-99A Prominar 40x99 Product description

  • 99 mm PROMINAR objective: the large objective gathers more light for a brighter image at dawn, dusk and overcast conditions, while the PROMINAR optical design helps preserve fine detail at long distance.
  • Fixed 40x wide-angle viewing: a dedicated 40x magnification gives a stable, distraction-free image with a broad apparent view that makes it easier to scan shorelines, hillsides and target lines.
  • 45° angled eyepiece: the angled layout is more comfortable for prolonged observation from a tripod and works especially well when several users of different heights share the scope.
  • Magnesium body with nitrogen filling: the lightweight metal housing keeps weight manageable for a 99 mm class scope, while the sealed, nitrogen-filled construction resists internal fogging in changing weather.
  • Dual-use field durability: waterproof, fogproof and shockproof construction helps the scope stay dependable for birdwatching, nature observation and range use in demanding outdoor conditions.

About the Kowa TSN-99 Prominar Series

The Kowa TSN-99 Prominar series sits at the top of Kowa’s spotting-scope range and was introduced with the TSN-99A and TSN-99S in 2021. Built around a 99 mm objective, it marked the largest objective diameter in Kowa’s spotting-scope history at the time of release, giving the series a clear role for users who want maximum image brightness and long-range detail from a field scope.

A defining feature of the series is its pure fluorite crystal objective lens paired with a Kowa XD concave lens. This optical layout is designed to reduce chromatic aberration and maintain high contrast, which matters when studying plumage detail, reading mirage on a range or separating small features at long distance. The series also uses a magnesium-alloy body, a dual-focus mechanism and a KR-coated objective lens, combining refined optical performance with practical field handling. Because the TSN-99 platform accepts interchangeable eyepieces and supports digiscoping through an accessory collar, it adapts well to birdwatching, wildlife observation and tripod-based target work. In this family, the TSN-99A provides an angled viewing design, while the TSN-99S uses a straight body.

About the Kowa TSN-99A Prominar 40x99

The Kowa TSN-99A Prominar 40x99 combines the angled TSN-99A body with a fixed 40x eyepiece, creating a spotting scope aimed at users who prefer a simple, optically focused setup over a variable-power system. A fixed eyepiece removes the need to balance magnification against image steadiness every time conditions change, which can be useful for birdwatchers following distant subjects, coastal observers scanning wide areas and target shooters who want a consistent sight picture from session to session.

The large 99.00 mm objective is the core of this model’s appeal. In practical use, that aperture helps maintain image brightness and detail when light is weak, while the 2.50 mm exit pupil at 40x keeps the image usable without pushing magnification so far that the view becomes dim or difficult to hold. The 39.00 m/1000m field of view supports easier subject acquisition than many narrow high-magnification setups, and the 17.00 mm eye relief gives a more comfortable viewing position, including for many eyeglass wearers.

The 45° eyepiece angle improves tripod ergonomics during long observation periods and is especially practical when viewing upward or when multiple people share one scope. Kowa pairs this with a magnesium housing to keep the scope relatively manageable for its size, while fully multicoated optics, nitrogen filling, waterproofing and fogproof construction support reliable outdoor use in changing weather. The result is a large-objective angled spotting scope built for users who value optical clarity, comfort and consistency at a dedicated 40x magnification.

About Kowa

Kowa’s origins date to 1894, when the Hattori Kanesaburo Wholesale Store was founded in Nagoya, Japan. The company later became Kowa Company, Ltd. in 1960, and it entered optical equipment manufacturing in 1946 with spectacle lenses and opera glasses. That long involvement in optics is especially relevant to spotting scopes, as Kowa released Japan’s first spotting scopes in 1952 with the TS-1 and TS-2.

Today, Kowa Company, Ltd. is headquartered in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, and its sporting-optics range includes binoculars and spotting scopes under the PROMINAR name. In this category, Kowa is particularly known for using pure fluorite crystal in PROMINAR optics, a material chosen to control color fringing and preserve fine detail at high magnification. Kowa spotting scopes were also selected as official equipment for shooting events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing reputation in precision observation optics.
