Welcome to Optics Trade debates. In each episode, we talk about a different topic and try to answer the most common questions we receive about it. Today, we are going to talk about the rangefinder measurement value on laser rangefinding optics.

It is usually defined as a maximal rangefinding range. The majority of manufacturers specify it differently and do not use the same standard. They usually measure the maximal range of a rangefinder on a big, highly reflective target.

Some manufacturers specify the maximal range for different types of targets. Per instance, a range for reflective and a range for non-reflective targets.

The higher the quality of the product the more accurate the specified value will be. The accuracy highly depends on the manufacturers. Premium manufacturers usually state a minimal/maximal range, and that is the range at which they guarantee that the LRF will work. Most optics that have a guaranteed minimal range exceed it.

The maximal rangefinding range has gone through the roof in the last few years. Five years ago, only the best devices had a maximal range of 1 km. Now (2018) there are rangefinders on the market that can measure distances over 2 kilometers without a problem. There are probably going to be multiple devices on the market that have a range of 3 or 4 km in the next two or three years.

Everything over 1500 m is already too much for the majority of applications, for hunting and shooting, but generally bigger is still better.

Is the maximum distance to which the laser rangefinding device correctly performs the measurement and determines the distance to the observed object. What is also good to know is that the given maximum rangefinding distance is only at perfect environmental conditions. This means, the rangefinder with a maximum rangefinding distance till 1000 meters will measure this distance only in cloudy weather, or when the sun goes down. Ina bright sunny or rainy days the maximum rangefinding distance shortens.
