Shield AMS – an enclosed, robust red dot sight

During our visit to Shield’s booth at Shot Show 2024, we explored their newest products. Shield is renowned for producing red dot sights that are exceptionally small, lightweight, and durable. Given the increasing popularity of optic-ready micro-compact handguns, it’s no surprise that their booth was incredibly crowded.

While the AMSc was the latest and most sought-after product this year, we also choose to cover the standard AMS model which continues to attract considerable attention.

What is the difference between Shield AMS and AMSc?

Although the AMS and AMSc models are both compact, enclosed reflex red dot sights, the AMSc is a bit smaller (with ‘c’ denoting its compact nature). This makes it more appropriate for micro-compact optic-ready pistols, while the AMS is more suited to full-size optic-ready pistols. The larger size of the AMS accommodates additional features, such as buttons for manual illumination control (in addition to automatic adjustment, which is the only option in the AMSc), and the capability to switch between reticles (2 MOA dot, 2 MOA dot & ring, 8 MOA dot, 8 MOA dot & ring).

Built to last

The AMS is built to endure tough environmental conditions, crafted from premium aircraft-grade aluminum with precise tolerances. It is waterproof and resistant to fogging thanks to the nitrogen-filling. Moreover, its enclosed construction prevents any debris from becoming stuck between the diode and lens, thereby boosting its reliability.

Shield AMS’ illumination properties

Users have the flexibility to choose between automatic and manual modes for illumination adjustment. In automatic mode, the brightness automatically adjusts to match the surrounding light levels, while in manual mode, there are 12 different brightness settings to choose from, with the three lowest settings being compatible with night vision. Conveniently, the battery compartment is positioned on the side, allowing for battery replacement without needing to detach the AMS from the firearm, thus eliminating the need for re-zeroing. Additionally, users can select from three types of batteries – CR2025, CR2032, or CR2050 – based on the preference for longer battery life or greater concealability.

Optical characteristics

The sight operates at true 1x magnification, so using it with both eyes open is convenient. The view through the lens is clear with no distortion or tint.

Uncompromised quality

Shield AMS stands out as one of the most durable red dot sights in its category, catering to users seeking uncompromised quality. It fits perfectly on full size pistols that are optic-ready for the Shield RMS mounting standard. Crafted, produced, and put together in the UK, it carries a price tag of 719 €.
