SureFire EP3 Sonic Defenders

• Filtered hearing protection: The EP3 Sonic Defenders reduce harmful impulse and high-noise exposure while still allowing routine sounds and conversation to come through when the filter caps are open, which helps on ranges, in training, and around intermittent machinery.
• 24 dB Noise Reduction Rating: With the filter caps inserted, the earplugs provide a 24 dB NRR, giving a stronger barrier against sustained noise when maximum attenuation matters more than ambient awareness.
• EarLock retention system: SureFire’s patented retention rings use seven contact points to keep the plugs seated consistently, helping maintain a reliable seal during movement and repeated insertion.
• Low-profile double-flanged design: The compact shape sits comfortably under hats, helmets, masks, earmuffs, or communication headsets, making the earplugs easier to wear for long sessions.
• Radio-communication compatible design: The EP3 can serve as earpieces for compatible radio communication systems, which adds flexibility for professional users who need hearing protection and comms integration in the same setup.

About the Sonic Defenders Series

SureFire Sonic Defenders are the company’s reusable EarPro hearing protection line for shooters, range staff, tactical users, and anyone working around intermittent high noise. The series is built around a simple idea: protect hearing without unnecessarily blocking the surrounding environment. Depending on the model, Sonic Defenders combine either filtered or full-block designs with flanged or foam earpieces, so users can choose between greater ambient awareness, higher attenuation, or a different fit style for their ear shape and use case.

A defining feature across the family is the use of EarLock retention rings, which help keep the earplugs stable and repeatable in fit. That matters because consistent placement is essential for consistent protection. The series is also known for its low-profile construction, allowing comfortable use with hats, helmets, masks, over-ear muffs, and communication gear. In practical terms, Sonic Defenders are aimed at users who want compact, non-electronic hearing protection that is easy to carry, quick to insert, and suitable for both range use and general noisy environments.

About the SureFire EP3 Sonic Defenders

The SureFire EP3 Sonic Defenders are filtered, double-flanged earplugs designed for users who need hearing protection but do not want to lose awareness of routine sounds. Their core advantage is the built-in noise-reducing filter, which allows lower-level ambient sound to pass while reducing potentially harmful noise above 85 dB. For practical use, that makes the EP3 well suited to shooting ranges, training environments, and work settings where communication and situational awareness still matter between louder events.

When more attenuation is needed, the attached filter caps can be inserted to deliver a 24 dB Noise Reduction Rating. This gives the EP3 a useful dual-role character: more open for conversation and awareness when conditions allow, more closed when the environment becomes steadily loud. The double-flanged stem helps create a secure seal while keeping the profile compact, and the soft hypoallergenic polymer is intended for long wear without the pressure points often associated with bulkier hearing protection.

Fit stability is another important part of this model. SureFire’s EarLock retention rings help the plugs stay in place during movement and repeated use, which is especially valuable on the range or when worn with other equipment. The low-profile shape also works well under helmets, hats, masks, headphones, or supplemental earmuffs. In addition, the EP3 can serve as an earpiece for compatible radio communication systems, making it a practical option for users who need passive hearing protection in a compact, field-friendly format.

About SureFire

SureFire began in 1979 as Laser Products, a company founded by Dr. John Matthews. From the start, the business focused on equipment for demanding professional use, and it introduced the LPC Model 7 commercial firearm laser sight in the same year. Over time, the company expanded into a broader range of shooting and tactical products, including firearm laser sights, tactical illumination tools, sound suppressors, and hearing protection.

The company introduced its first WeaponLights in 1985, and in 2001 Laser Products changed its name to SureFire, LLC. Today, SureFire is known for product lines that include handheld flashlights, weapon-mounted lights, laser aiming devices, suppressors, and EarPro hearing protection. For hearing protection in particular, the brand’s Sonic Defenders models are recognized for their EarLock retention ring design, which uses seven contact points to help keep the earpieces secure and consistently positioned.
