Hawke Frontier ED X 8x42 Product description

  • 42mm Objective Lens for Enhanced Low-Light Performance: The 42mm objective lens delivers an exit pupil of 5.3mm — larger than the 4mm of the 8×32 model — which supports a brighter, more accessible image in the reduced-light conditions of early morning and late evening hunting, wildlife observation, and birdwatching. The 42mm objective also contributes to an apparent field of view of 65° and a real-world field of view of 142 metres at 1,000 metres — among the widest in the 8×42 class.
  • Extra-Low Dispersion Glass with Dielectric Coated BAK-4 Roof Prisms: The Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass in the lens elements reduces chromatic aberration and colour fringing on high-contrast subjects. The dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms with phase correction maximise light transmission through the prism stage and maintain resolution and contrast across the full aperture, delivering the clean, high-definition image characteristic of the H7 optical system.
  • Wide Field of View with 65° Apparent Field: The field of view of 142 metres at 1,000 metres and apparent field of view of 65° provide an exceptionally broad, immersive sight picture for landscape scanning, wildlife observation, and fast target acquisition in hunting and nature observation applications. The generous field supports extended glassing sessions without the narrow-tunnel feel of some binoculars in this class.
  • Close Focus at 2 Metres: The minimum focus distance of 2 metres is one of the closest available in the 8×42 class and extends the usability of the binocular to subjects at very short range — relevant for close-range birdwatching, insect and flora observation, and any application where the binocular needs to focus on nearby subjects without repositioning.
  • Magnesium Alloy Chassis with 18mm Eye Relief and Tripod Thread: The body is constructed from magnesium alloy with rubber armour, nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof. The 18mm of eye relief is comfortable for use with or without eyeglasses. A built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread supports use on a tripod or binocular mount for steadier extended observation.

About the Frontier ED X Binocular Series

The Frontier ED X series is Hawke's primary H7-tier binocular range, built on the H7 optical system with Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass, dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms, and phase correction as standard across all models. The series is designed for hunters, birders, nature observers, and outdoor enthusiasts who want high optical performance and broad versatility in a range of sizes and magnification options.

All Frontier ED X models feature water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses, a magnesium alloy chassis with nitrogen purging and waterproof sealing, replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops, stay-on lens covers, and a built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread. The series spans compact 32mm and full-size 42mm configurations across 8× and 10× magnifications, available in both green and grey finishes. The Frontier ED X 8×42 is the most versatile all-round configuration in the series, combining the light-gathering benefit of the 42mm objective with the broad field of view and comfortable image of 8× magnification.

About the Model (Hawke Frontier ED X 8x42)

The Hawke Frontier ED X 8x42 is a full-size binocular designed for hunters, birders, and nature observers who want the light-gathering capability of a 42mm objective lens combined with the broad field of view and natural image scale of 8× magnification in a high-quality H7 optical platform. The field of view of 142 metres at 1,000 metres and apparent field of view of 65° are among the widest in the 8×42 class, providing an immersive sight picture for extended glassing and fast target acquisition. The exit pupil of 5.3mm supports image brightness in the low-light conditions most relevant to hunting and nature observation.

The ED glass lens elements reduce chromatic aberration and colour fringing, while the dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms with phase correction maximise light transmission and resolution through the prism system. The water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses provide reliable performance in rain and wet conditions. The close focus distance of 2 metres — among the closest in the 8×42 class — extends the binocular's usability to nearby subjects without repositioning.

Available in two colour finishes: Green (art. no. 38410) and Grey (art. no. 38411). The 18mm of eye relief and replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops accommodate both bare-eyed and eyeglass-wearing users. The built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread allows use on a tripod or binocular mount. Stay-on lens covers remain attached during use. The magnesium alloy chassis is nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof. Weight is 725 g and dimensions are 105–123 mm wide × 140 mm high.
