Hawke Frontier APO 8x42 Product description

  • APO Lenses with Extra-Low Dispersion Glass: The Frontier APO is Hawke's highest-specification binocular, distinguished from the Frontier ED X models by the addition of APO (apochromatic) lens elements combined with Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass. The APO design corrects chromatic aberration across three wavelengths of light rather than two — delivering a measurable improvement in colour accuracy, contrast, and edge sharpness compared to standard ED binoculars. The practical result is a cleaner, more neutral image with minimal colour fringing on high-contrast edges, which is particularly apparent when observing in bright outdoor conditions.
  • Exceptionally Wide Field of View — 142 Metres at 1,000 Metres: The field of view of 142 metres at 1,000 metres and an apparent field of view of 65° place the Frontier APO among the widest-field binoculars in the 8×42 class. The broad field of view supports fast target acquisition, wide-angle landscape scanning, and a naturally immersive sight picture during extended glassing sessions — all while maintaining the image quality expected of an APO optical system at the edges of the field.
  • Dielectric Mirror Coated BAK-4 Roof Prisms with Phase Correction: The BAK-4 roof prisms use dielectric mirror coatings — a multi-layer reflective coating that provides significantly higher light reflection than silver or aluminium coatings — ensuring maximum light transmission through the prism system. Phase correction coatings eliminate the phase shift that roof prism designs introduce to the light path, which is particularly important for maintaining resolution and contrast across the full aperture of the objective lens.
  • Close Focus of 2 Metres: The minimum focus distance of 2 metres is unusually close for an 8×42 binocular and significantly extends the usability of the optic to close-range subjects — from insects and flora at short range to birds perched at close distance. This is particularly relevant for nature observation and birding use where the ability to focus on nearby subjects without repositioning is a practical advantage.
  • Magnesium Alloy Chassis with Tripod Thread: The body is constructed from magnesium alloy, providing structural rigidity and durability at lower weight than aluminium. The chassis is nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof, with a built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread for use on a tripod or binocular mount adapter during extended stationary observation.

About the Frontier APO Binocular Series

The Frontier APO is Hawke's flagship binocular, positioned above the Frontier ED X as the highest optical specification in the Hawke binocular range. Built on the H7 optical system, the APO series adds apochromatic lens correction to the ED glass and dielectric prism coating specification of the Frontier ED X, delivering the highest level of chromatic aberration control and colour fidelity in the Hawke lineup.

All Frontier APO models feature APO lens elements, Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass, dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms, phase correction, water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses, a magnesium alloy chassis, replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops, and a built-in tripod mounting thread. The wide-band anti-reflection coating system and dielectric prism coatings ensure maximum light transmission across the visible spectrum, supporting a bright, high-contrast image with natural colour rendering across all lighting conditions. The Frontier APO is currently available in a single configuration: 8×42 in green.

About the Model (Hawke Frontier APO 8x42 — Green)

The Hawke Frontier APO 8x42 is the highest-specification binocular in the Hawke range, designed for hunters, nature observers, birders, and optics enthusiasts who want the best available image quality from a Hawke binocular in a practical field-ready 8×42 format. The 8× magnification with a 42mm objective lens delivers a field of view of 142 metres at 1,000 metres — notably wide for the 8×42 class — with an apparent field of view of 65° that provides an immersive, panoramic sight picture during extended use. The exit pupil of 5.3mm and 18mm of eye relief support comfortable use for both bare-eyed and eyeglass-wearing users across a wide range of ambient light conditions.

The APO lens system with Extra-Low Dispersion glass corrects chromatic aberration across the full visible spectrum, producing a cleaner, more neutral image with minimal colour fringing on high-contrast edges. The dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms with phase correction maximise light transmission and maintain resolution and contrast across the full aperture. The wide-band anti-reflection and water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses complete an optical package designed to deliver the highest image quality the H7 system can provide.

The minimum focus distance of 2 metres is one of the closest available in the 8×42 class. The replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops accommodate a range of users and shooting positions. The built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod thread allows use on a tripod or binocular mount for extended stationary observation. The magnesium alloy chassis is nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof. Weight is 740 g and dimensions are 109–130 mm wide × 141 mm high. The green finish provides a discreet visual profile in field and woodland environments.

About Hawke

Hawke Optics is a British optics brand registered in England and Wales, with products distributed across Europe, North America, and international markets. The company produces a broad range of optical products including riflescopes, airgun scopes, crossbow scopes, red dot sights, reflex sights, binoculars, spotting scopes, and laser rangefinders, covering applications from hunting and precision shooting to nature observation and marine use.

Hawke organises its product lineup into distinct optical system tiers — from the entry-level H2 through H5 to the flagship H7. The Frontier series represents the H7 tier, Hawke's highest optical specification, covering riflescopes, red dot sights, reflex sights, rangefinding binoculars, binoculars, and spotting scopes. The Frontier APO binocular sits at the top of this tier as the highest-specification binocular in the Hawke range.

Hi, love your reviews btw. I was wondering if you guys can review Hawke frontier APO 8x42 & 10x42.

Thanks

PS:I AM BIRDER N WANT DECIDE WHICH TO BUY

by Yogi

Thank you very much for your kind praise. So far we haven't had the opportunity to review these binoculars from Hawke as we didn't have them at our warehouse yet. This is something that we definitely will look into as soon as possible. For birdwatching, we would recommend 10x magnification over 8x, as you will be able to grasp more details and have a slight advantage over greater distances. Since birdwatching usually takes place during the day we would recommend a 42 mm binocular.
