Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 Straightwall

• 3-9x magnification range: This classic zoom range covers the distances most straight-wall hunting rifles are used for, giving a wide enough view at 3x for closer shots and more aiming precision at 9x when the target is farther out.
• 40 mm objective lens: The objective size keeps the scope trim and easy to mount while still gathering enough light for the low-light periods when many deer hunts begin and end.
• Second focal plane Duplex reticle: The familiar Duplex layout stays visually consistent through the zoom range, so the sight picture remains uncluttered and fast to read when a shot opportunity develops quickly.
• Fully multicoated optics: Lens coatings help improve contrast and reduce glare, making it easier to separate game from brush and hold a clearer sight picture in mixed light.
• Waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof construction: A nitrogen-filled build helps the scope stay clear through weather changes, transport, and field knocks, which matters on hard-recoiling straight-wall rifles used in rough hunting conditions.

About the Leupold VX-Freedom Series

The Leupold VX-Freedom series was introduced on January 22, 2018 as a budget-conscious riflescope line for hunters and shooters who want dependable field performance without moving into Leupold’s more specialized premium ranges. In the company’s lineup, VX-Freedom sits as a practical all-around family built for common hunting and sporting use, with configurations for rimfire, muzzleloader, and centerfire firearms.

A defining trait of the series is its emphasis on straightforward usability. Leupold describes these scopes as waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof, making them suitable for changing weather and regular field carry. The line also uses the Twilight Light Management System, which is intended to manage glare and support visibility in low-light conditions where contrast matters more than raw magnification. Across the series, buyers can choose from different reticle layouts and selected models with the Custom Dial System, so the VX-Freedom family covers everything from simple woods hunting setups to more cartridge-specific applications. The overall design philosophy is light weight, familiar controls, and practical optical performance for rifles that are carried often and shot from realistic hunting positions.

About the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 Straightwall

The Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 Straightwall is built around the needs of hunters using straight-wall cartridges, where shots are often taken at moderate distances and speed matters as much as precision. Its 3-9x magnification range is a natural fit for this role: 3x helps maintain awareness in timber, field edges, and driven-game style situations, while 9x gives enough image scale for careful shot placement when the distance stretches. The 40 mm objective keeps the scope balanced on compact hunting rifles and supports useful brightness during dawn and dusk outings.

This model uses a second focal plane Duplex reticle, a proven layout that remains easy to acquire against dark game or busy backgrounds. Because the reticle does not change apparent size as magnification changes, the sight picture stays familiar throughout the zoom range, which many hunters prefer for instinctive shooting. The scope also uses a 1-inch tube and offers 60 MOA of elevation and windage adjustment, giving enough adjustment range for normal zeroing and setup flexibility on typical hunting rifles.

In practical use, the fast-focus eyepiece helps bring the reticle into sharp focus quickly, while the fully multicoated lenses support better contrast and glare control in uneven light. With a 315.00 mm length and 346.00 g weight, it stays easy to carry and does not make a lightweight rifle feel top-heavy. Nitrogen filling, along with waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof construction, makes it a sensible hunting riflescope for wet mornings, cold stands, and repeated recoil from straight-wall platforms.

About Leupold

Leupold & Volpel was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1907 by Fred Leupold and Adam Volpel. Today, Leupold & Stevens, Inc. is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, United States and remains a family-owned company focused on sport optics for hunting, shooting, and outdoor use. Its product range includes riflescopes, red dot sights, binoculars, spotting scopes, rangefinders, and thermal optics.

Leupold’s history in riflescopes is especially relevant here. The company introduced its first riflescope, the Plainsman, in 1947, and later introduced the Duplex reticle in 1962, a design that became a long-standing reference point in hunting optics. Leupold also produces the VX-series for general hunting and sporting use and the Mark-series for tactical applications, which reflects a long-running specialization in durable American-made optics for field and range use.
