How is the analogy compass adjusted for different locations on the earth?

by William Morrissey

Dear Sir!

The analog compass in the Steiner Commander 7x50 is not manually adjusted for different locations on Earth. The compass is factory-balanced for a specific magnetic zone. Units sold in the Northern Hemisphere are normally configured for Zone 2.

If the binoculars are used far outside the magnetic zone for which the compass was configured, the compass may no longer operate correctly. Changing the compass to another magnetic zone requires the compass module to be changed and cannot be done by the user.

Could you please clarify the key differences with the new Commander open bridge model, and whether you think it’s an improvement or whether the older model is better?

by James

Dear James,

thank you for contacting us.

The main improvement as you say is the open bridge and overall build design which adds ergonomics, a fresh look of the binoculars, and more stability when using it. The older model is not better in the sense of optical quality than the new one.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at [email protected]. We are here to help.

Hello A year ago I bought a Steiner Comander 7x50 with compass from you I use it on a boat but I can't measure the distance to land with the scale that is on the lens Please give me some guidance or help. Thank you and lp David

Hvala in lp David

by David

Dear David,

Thank you for contacting us.

Example calculation:

You are on a boat and you are looking at a ship that is 10m high. Then you read the number that the scale shows you (e.g. 20). Then divide the height of the ship (10m) by the number on the scale (20). Then multiply the number you get by 1000. So 10/20= 0.5 x 1000 is 500. This means that the ship you are looking at is 500 m away.

If you need any information, we are always at your disposal.

Greetings

Lep pozdrav
