MAK Picatinny Rail for Sako 75/85 M, L Product description

Introduction

Picatinny rail consists of slots with 5.23 mm spaces between one another, which means that it can be used across its entire length. It is simple to mount and interchangeable – if something is made for a Picatinny rail, it will fit regardless of the manufacturer or manufacturing date. It is affordable, resilient and reliable – this is why it so commonly used by professionals and military. Because of all its great qualities, Picatinny rail has been dominating the rail market in the recent years.

Picatinny is a big step forward from the Weaver standard. Weaver has a few predesignated slots while Picatinny has slots all over its surface, allowing the device to be mounted wherever the user finds it fitting. Weaver's slot is 3.8 mm wide, which is why ring mounts made for a Weaver rail will also fit on a Picatinny rail while ring mounts made specifically for a Picatinny rail will not fit on a Weaver rail. This is one of the main reasons why Picatinny is a far better mounting solution.

MAK is one of the biggest mount manufacturers in Germany. All of their Picatinny rails are manufactured from high-quality steel and are known for their mat finish that does not reflect light. The edges of the rails are wavy, adding to the high-quality appearance. MAK Picatinny rails lack a slot that would allow the user to use the Picatinny rail with sights.

About the rifle

Sako or Civil Guard Gun-Machiningworks LTD is a Finnish firearm producer located in Riihimäki. It was founded in 1919 as a workshop for repairing military rifles left from WW I. In 1921, it became an independent commercial enterprise. They started exporting pistol cartridges to Sweden in the 1930s. After WW II, Sako started manufacturing rifles. Their first invention was the Model L-42 rifle (patented in 1942), followed by L-46 in 1949. For a short period of time, Sako Firearms also produced lever-action rifles (Finnwolf) and rimfire rifles (Finnscout). Over decades, Sako produced more than 40 different models of firearms with various rifle chamberings. The company was owned by a series of owners. Currently, owner of the company is an Italian firearms holding company Beretta Holding. In 2013, Sako reached a new production record of over 100.000 rifles produced.

Sako 85 is a bolt-action rifle with a controlled-feed action. Similarly to other Sako rifles, model 85 has a conical dove-tail on the top of the action which tapers towards the rear part of the receiver – for mounting purposes (front dove-tail base is wider than the rear dove-tail base). There are no mounting holes. Barrels are drilled, honed and cold-hammer forged. Sako 85 features a recoil stop at the rear mounting surface.

Sako 85 rifles come in six action sizes: XS, S, SM, M, L, and XL. This mount is suitable for M, L and XL action lengths since the front mounting surface can be moved and fixed at various positions.

Sako 85 is available in six action lengths. When a rifle is available in more than one action length, only two-piece mounts are interchangeable between these rifles (a two-piece mount made for Sako 85 L-XL can also be mounted on Sako 85 XS, S, SM, and M). One-piece mounts will only fit a rifle with a specific action length (a one-piece mount made for Sako 85 L-XL will not fit Sako 85 XS, S, SM, and M). This one-piece mount is an exception since the front mounting surface can be moved.

Rifles Sako Forest-Finnbear, Vixen and models 75/85 have similar actions. This is why, for example, two-piece mounts made for Sako Forest-Finnbear will fit rifles Sako Vixen and models 75/85 while one-piece mounts made for Sako Forest-Finnbear will not fit rifles Sako Vixen and models 75/85. These rifles do not have mounting surfaces with radiuses since they have a dove-tail on the receiver. Sako dove-tails are conical – they taper towards the rear part of the receiver.

This mount will also fit Sako 75 rifles of all receiver lengths.

Mounting instructions

Remove all the stains (grease, oil etc.) from the rifle's receiver with a cleaning fluid (acetone). Once the surface is clean and dry, check whether the screws match the rail and the holes on the receiver. Make sure that the Picatinny rail is compatible with the rifle by inspecting the mounting holes on both. Before mounting the rail permanently, apply a minimal amount of thread-locking fluid 278 or 648 on screws and contact surfaces. Be careful not to get the fluid in or near the mounting holes. Carefully clean the remaining excess fluid around the rail with a cleaning fluid. Using a torque driver, screw the screws appropriately (up to 2.2 Nm) – do not overtighten.

L.S. i own a Sako M995-S in 6.5x55 SE. I bought the Contessa 85 L-XL picatinny rail in 20 moa to fit the rifle's receiver this mount turned out to be 24 mm to short to fit the front dovetail properly, my question to you will the MAK adjustable mount overlap this 24 mm in the most extended modus of the adjustabel part of the mount? The figures are , backside rear Sako optilock mount to backside front Sako Optilock mount on the receiver is 148 mm back side back dovetail clamp to backside front dovetail clamp on the Contessa 20 moa picatinny rail is 124 mm. So the Contessa xl mount is approximately 24 mm to short for my M995. To make the data complete the receiver opening on my rifle is 92 mm and the drawlength of the bolt 119 mm. Hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards, Cees v.d. Straaten

Hello! I received my order today and was pretty happy with it. One thing which I should mention, was the fact that the picatinny rear base did not fit well with Sako 75 (see 2 pictures with black stock rifle), but fit well with sako 85 (the picture with brown stock). Although I know myself that these both should be the same base fitments, it wasn't so. Very sure that I have Sako 75 V. It seemed that the rear base was attached well and if so after shooting, no problems. Thank You for quick dispatch, I was very pleased and will order one item more today.

by Hendrik

Dear Hendrik,

thank you for contacting us.

We have to inform you that you have the rear base installed backwards. The side with the cutout has to be facing toward the front of the rifle.

Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Kind regards.

Hello! Looking for a picatinny rail with bases that fits right on my Sako 75 Y 300winmag and would like to buy 2 pairs of 30mm quick mounts with it. Looked at Rusan options, but couldn't decide what height the rings should be. Is 14mm enough to fit 56mm Swarovski, Thermion 50mm or similar. I would rather keep some mm of distance between the barrel and scope than put it to contact. Please help to decide. Same question actually with Sako 85 XS 223.rem also. Is it possible to sheer the scope between these two rifles with the same scope mount setup or not?

by Hendrik

Dear Hendrik,

thank you for contacting us.

This Picatinny rail would be suitable for your Sako 75 rifle chambered in the .300 Winchester Magnum. For a 56 mm Swarovski scope, we would suggest a total BH height of around 17 mm. For a Sako 85 rifle chambered in the.223 Remington, you would require a shorter Picatinny rail with the likes of Contessa shown on the page below.

https://www.optics-trade.eu/en/contessa-picatinny-rail-for-sako-85-xs-0-moa.html

In order to use the same scope on two different rifles, you would require two 100% repeatable and quick-detachable mounts in order to quickly interchange between the two, without the need to zero the scope every time.

If you are inclined towards such a solution, you can contact us directly at [email protected] for further assistance in the matter.

Great workmanship! Small fitting problem.

See my Video for my review and how I installed this rail. This is very nice looking rail. Just had a small fit problem, but it was easy to fix with a large punch and hammer. The support people here really make it work. They always helped me in a timely manner.
