Flir Scion PTM466 Product description

  • 640x512 Boson thermal core: The higher-resolution sensor shows more detail at distance, helping users separate people, vehicles, and background clutter more confidently during surveillance, search work, and evidence recovery.
  • 60 Hz refresh rate: Fast image updates keep movement looking natural, which matters when tracking subjects on the move or scanning from a vehicle without the lag common to slower thermal devices.
  • Long-range 36.00 mm objective: Combined with a 1420.00 m detection range, this lens setup is tuned for observation over open ground, giving the monocular more reach for perimeter work and wide-area scanning.
  • 1280x960 HD LCD display with recording: A high-resolution internal display makes thermal detail easier to interpret, while onboard photo and video capture supports documentation after an incident or during field operations.
  • Rugged weather-sealed housing with WiFi: Waterproof, fogproof construction and wireless connectivity make the Scion PTM466 suitable for demanding outdoor use while also supporting live sharing of thermal footage when coordination matters.

About the Flir Scion PTM Series Series

The Flir Scion PTM Series was introduced on January 22, 2019 as a handheld thermal monocular family developed for public safety professionals. Built around FLIR Boson thermal cores, the series was designed for law enforcement thermal surveillance, including pursuits, evidence recovery, and search-and-rescue work where fast detection matters more than visible-light detail. The range replaced FLIR’s H-series handheld thermal cameras and was offered with both 320 × 256 and 640 × 512 detector options, along with multiple lens configurations to suit different observation distances.

A defining trait of the series is its combination of field durability and connected workflow. Scion PTM monoculars use an IP67-rated housing and support encrypted wireless thermal video streaming, including connectivity with FLIR TruWITNESS. The platform also supports geotagged video and still-image recording to internal storage or a microSD card, while features such as picture-in-picture zoom, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth broaden its role beyond simple observation. Although FLIR now identifies the series as discontinued, the Scion PTM line remains a clear example of a professional thermal handheld built for operational use rather than casual spotting.

About the Flir Scion PTM466

The Flir Scion PTM466 is a 1x thermal monocular configured for users who need strong detection capability without the bulk of a larger observation system. Its 640x512 VOx uncooled sensor with a 12.00 μm pixel pitch gives this model the detail advantage expected from the higher-end Scion variants, which is especially useful when identifying heat signatures against complex backgrounds. With a 36.00 mm objective lens and a stated 1420.00 m detection range, the PTM466 is suited to longer observation distances than compact short-lens thermal monoculars, making it a practical fit for perimeter security, rural patrol, and search operations across open terrain.

The viewing experience is built around a 1280x960 HD LCD display and a 60.00 Hz refresh rate. In practice, that means smoother motion rendering when panning and better visual continuity when following moving subjects. The monocular also records both still images and 1280 x 960 video, adding value for reporting, post-event review, and evidence collection. WiFi connectivity, video output, and the integrated compass further support coordinated field use, while central focusing and central diopter adjustment keep operation straightforward under stress.

Mechanically, the PTM466 is built for hard outdoor use. Its waterproof, fogproof, nitrogen-filled housing is paired with shock-resistant construction and an operating temperature range of -40℃ - 70℃, so the device is suited to difficult weather and demanding environments. A 793.00 g body and tripod adaptability also make sense for longer observation sessions where stability matters more than pocket-sized carry.

About Flir

FLIR Systems was established in 1978 to develop infrared thermal imaging systems for airborne applications. The company was headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, United States and built its reputation around thermal imaging and related sensing systems for commercial, industrial, and government use. Over time, FLIR expanded its thermal expertise through acquisitions including Agema of Sweden in 1998, Inframetrics in 1999, and Indigo Systems in 2003, strengthening its position in infrared detector and camera technology.

That background is directly relevant to products such as the Scion PTM, because FLIR’s core strength has long been the ability to detect infrared energy emitted as heat by people, objects, and materials in conditions where visible light is limited or absent. In 2021, Teledyne Technologies acquired FLIR, bringing the brand into a broader sensing and imaging portfolio while preserving its strong association with handheld thermal devices for outdoor and professional use.
