Kowa Highlander Prominar Product description

  • Pure fluorite crystal objectives: The 82 mm objective lenses use Kowa PROMINAR fluorite crystal to reduce chromatic aberration, helping the binocular deliver cleaner edges, better contrast and more natural colour at long distance.
  • 32x wide-angle viewing: Fixed 32x magnification gives the reach needed for distant wildlife, coastal observation and astronomy, while the wide apparent field of view keeps the image immersive and easier to follow.
  • Individual focus eyepieces: Separate focusing for each eye allows precise adjustment to the user’s vision and keeps the binocular stable for prolonged observation once set.
  • Magnesium waterproof body: The magnesium housing keeps this large binocular durable without unnecessary bulk, while waterproof, nitrogen-filled construction supports reliable use in damp, cold and changeable conditions.
  • Tripod-oriented design: With its large 82 mm objectives and 6200.00 g build, the Highlander Prominar is made for mounted observation, giving a steadier image and less fatigue during long sessions in the field.

About the Highlander Prominar Series

The Highlander Prominar series sits among Kowa’s premium large-format binoculars, developed for users who need more optical reach and image refinement than conventional handheld binoculars can provide. This series is aimed at demanding long-range observation, including bird watching, open-country wildlife scanning, coastal use and astronomy binocular applications where image stability and low colour fringing matter as much as magnification.

A defining feature of the series is its use of PROMINAR fluorite crystal objective lenses, a material Kowa is closely associated with in its high-end sporting optics. In practical use, this helps suppress false colour and preserves fine detail at high magnification, especially against bright skies, reflective water or high-contrast terrain. The series also stands out for its interchangeable eyepiece system, allowing the binocular to be adapted for different viewing priorities, and for its individual-focus layout, which favours precise setup over rapid close-range refocusing. Combined with a robust weather-sealed body and tripod-based handling, the Highlander Prominar family is built as a specialist observation platform rather than a general-purpose handheld binocular.

About the Kowa Highlander Prominar

The Kowa Highlander Prominar is a large-format binocular designed for situations where a standard binocular no longer provides enough reach or image control. Its 32.00 x magnification and 82.00 mm objectives make it particularly well suited to long-distance observation across valleys, wetlands, coastlines and night skies, where resolving small details matters more than portability. The combination of high magnification and a 2.56 mm exit pupil gives the image a focused, high-detail character that works especially well in daylight and clear atmospheric conditions.

Optically, this model benefits from fully multicoated lenses and Kowa’s PROMINAR concept, helping maintain contrast and colour fidelity while reducing distracting chromatic aberration. The 20.00 mm eye relief is generous for a high-magnification binocular and improves comfort for eyeglass wearers, while the 70.40 ° apparent field of view gives a more open, less tunnel-like image than many specialist long-range binoculars. Its Porro prism construction supports strong stereoscopic depth perception and a spacious image presentation.

Mechanically, the binocular is built around a magnesium housing with waterproof and fogproof protection through nitrogen filling. The separated focusing system and diopter adjustment on both eyepieces allow the image to be tuned precisely to each eye, which is particularly useful for extended static observation from a tripod. With tripod adaptability built in, the Highlander Prominar is configured as a serious mounted observation instrument for users who prioritise image quality, stability and long-range detail.

About Kowa

Kowa’s origins date to 1894, when Hattori Kanesaburo Wholesale Store was founded in Nagoya, Japan. The company later developed into Kowa Company, Ltd., which is headquartered in Nagoya, Aichi. Kowa entered optical equipment manufacturing in 1946, beginning with spectacle lenses and opera glasses, and this early move established the foundation for its later work in precision sporting optics.

In the years that followed, Kowa became particularly well known for observation optics. It released Japan’s first spotting scopes, the TS-1 and TS-2, in 1952, and Kowa spotting scopes were selected as official equipment for shooting events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Today, Kowa’s sporting optics range includes binoculars and spotting scopes under the PROMINAR name, a line associated with the company’s use of pure fluorite crystal and its focus on high-resolution, low-aberration viewing instruments.
