Recknagel Front Ring and Foot for Suhl-Claw Mount, 25.4 mm Product description

  • Traditional Suhl-claw design: This front ring and foot is made for the classic Suhl claw mounting system, giving gunsmiths the correct front interface for a detachable scope setup on traditional hunting rifles.
  • 25.4 mm ring size: Built for 1 inch scope tubes, it matches many classic riflescopes and helps preserve a period-correct look on sporting and combination guns.
  • Steel construction: The steel body supports a rigid, durable connection at the front of the mount, which matters on a fitted claw system where precise engagement and long service life are essential.
  • Detachable mount component: As part of a Suhl claw mount, it supports a scope installation that can be removed and reattached after proper fitting, which is useful when alternating between open sights and an optic.
  • Made in Germany: German manufacture suits the traditional character of this mounting part and reflects the close tolerances expected for gunsmith-fitted claw mounts.

About the Recknagel Suhl-Claw Mounts Series

Recknagel Suhl-Claw Mounts continue a mounting system that was developed by gunsmiths in Suhl in the 1920s. The series remains a traditional choice for classic hunting rifles, especially where owners want a detachable scope mount that suits the lines and handling of older sporting arms rather than a modern rail-based setup. Instead of relying on a standardized interface, the system uses a front hook and rear locking mechanism and is fitted to the individual firearm.

That design philosophy is what defines the series. When properly fitted, the mount is intended to return the scope to the same position after removal and replacement, which is why Suhl claw mounts remain relevant for hunters who remove optics for transport, storage, or use with iron sights. Recknagel offers the series in versions for different scope-tube diameters and also in upper parts for manufacturer-specific rails such as Zeiss and Swarovski. Across the range, the emphasis stays on traditional detachable mounting, close mechanical fit, and compatibility with rifles that benefit from a classic low-profile installation.

About the Recknagel Front Ring and Foot for Suhl-Claw Mount, 25.4 mm

The Recknagel Front Ring and Foot for Suhl-Claw Mount, 25.4 mm is a specialized mounting component for building or restoring a Suhl claw scope mount around a riflescope with a 25.4 mm (1 inch) main tube. It combines the front ring with the front foot, forming the forward engagement point of the mount. In a traditional claw setup, that front connection is critical because it establishes how the optic hooks into place before the rear section locks the scope down.

The steel construction suits this role well. On a fitted claw mount, the front assembly must hold its shape and maintain a precise interface over repeated use, and steel remains the established material for that kind of long-term mechanical stability. The 0 MOA inclination keeps the part neutral, which is appropriate for classic hunting installations where the goal is a straightforward, properly aligned scope position rather than built-in cant for long-range dialing.

This component is best suited to traditional sporting rifles and combination guns that use the Suhl claw system and wear a 1 inch riflescope. It is also a practical choice for repair work, restoration, or a custom build where maintaining the original character of the firearm matters as much as function. Finished in green / black and made in Germany, it fits naturally into a classic detachable mounting system that values clean lines, secure engagement, and repeatable positioning after correct gunsmith fitting.

About Recknagel

Recknagel is a German manufacturer of firearm and riflescope mounting systems, sights, and hunting accessories. The company began in 1867, when Adolf Recknagel started manufacturing firearm sights in Albrechts near Suhl, Thuringia. Over time, the range expanded to include scope mounts, Picatinny rails, firearm sights, triggers, safeties, and later hunting silencers.

The company has remained closely associated with precision mounting solutions for hunting and sporting firearms. Recknagel relocated from Schweinfurt to Bergrheinfeld in 2006, launched the ERATAC line of tactical mounts and accessories in 2010, and added lightweight hunting silencers in 2016. In 2022, the company was acquired by Dr. Moritz Fehrer. For products such as traditional claw-mount components, Recknagel is known for combining long-standing German gunmaking traditions with modern manufacturing.

I have a Weatherby .257 Magnum rifle with the German claw type scope rings. The scope is bad . Are any of these scope rings to use to insert into the existing claw mounts for a moder scope as I do not want to machine etc on the receiver

by Aubrey

Dear Aubrey,

thank you for contacting us.

Basically you have an option to add a new Claw ring mount for a new scope, or you can redesign your Claw mount into a Picatinny rail that can literally accept any type of optics.

In any case, you will need to consult with your local gunsmith as he will need to do the majority of the work.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at [email protected]. We are here to help.

I have a large dovetail in the front ring of a 98 mauser. (approximately 22mm) Will the front ring base fit the dovetail? See attached photo. For a 1" diameter scope tube, what are my options for rings with my bases, for rings with your bases.

by Scott

Dear Sir,

thank you for your inquiry.

Please accept our apologies for the late reply, which is a result of the increased demand for our services.

The rings can be mounted on your Suhl bases shown in the attached photos as well as on the Suhl bases that we provide together with rings. However, we kindly ask you to send us some photos of the mounting surface of your rifle so that we can properly assist you. We are unfortunately unfamiliar with the definition of a 22mm dovetail you are referring to.

You can reach us anytime at  [email protected] where our team of experts will be happy to assist you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Hi. I have a Merkel O/U double rifle with Suhl mount bases I am trying to retro fit. The front one needs to be about 22 mm wide ,it has two 4mm wide slots and a space of about 9mm between them. Do you have a blank that can be ground to fit? I would also like to know the cross sectional dimensions of the rear mounts you have. I will be using a 25mm tube on these rings. I can send more pics or diagrams if that would be helpful. Thanks, Greg

IS IT FOR A BERNO 465?

by Alejandro

Please note that this mount is suitable for rifles that have a German Suhl-Claw base incorporated in the rifle.

Hi I needed the bases and rings, kit for berno 465 for 1 inch tube thanks

by Alejandro

With Suhl or German Claw mounts, there is some significant information of paramount importance that we have to share with you.

The majority of Suhl mounts were made by demand (a particular rifle combined with a particular riflescope) which means that there is an abundance of different configurations in terms of heights and dimensions.

We usually suggest that our customers find a very good gunsmith which will accommodate the customer with all the necessary information regarding the exact heights and dimensions which are required for the mount to work perfectly.

We would kindly ask the same of you. Please contact your gunsmith (in case you are not a gunsmith yourself) to confirm if the configuration which you are referring to will work with your rifle in practice.

Please note that we can order any sort of Suhl mounting compartments for you once you have all the necessary information.
