Hawke Frontier ED X 8x32 Product description

  • Extra-Low Dispersion Glass with Dielectric Coated BAK-4 Roof Prisms: The Frontier ED X uses Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass in the lens elements to reduce chromatic aberration and colour fringing — the coloured edges that appear on high-contrast subjects at the periphery of lower-specification optics. The BAK-4 roof prisms carry dielectric mirror coatings, which provide significantly higher reflectivity than silver or aluminium coatings and maximise light transmission through the prism stage. Combined with phase correction, the result is high resolution and contrast across the full field of view.
  • Compact 32mm Objective Lens — Lightweight and Versatile: The 32mm objective lens keeps the overall weight at 540 g and the dimensions compact at 100–118 mm wide × 120 mm high, making the Frontier ED X 8x32 one of the most portable options in the Frontier binocular range. The compact format makes it well suited to travelling, hiking, birdwatching, and any application where minimising carried weight and pack volume are priorities without sacrificing optical quality.
  • Wide Field of View with 62° Apparent Field: The field of view of 135 metres at 1,000 metres and an apparent field of view of 62° provide a broad, naturally immersive sight picture for landscape scanning, wildlife observation, and fast target acquisition. The generous field supports extended glassing sessions without the narrow-tunnel feel of some premium compact binoculars.
  • Close Focus at 2.5 Metres: The minimum focus distance of 2.5 metres extends the usability of the binocular to close-range subjects — birds at close range, insects, flora, and any detailed close-range observation — without requiring repositioning or a separate close-focus optic.
  • Magnesium Alloy Chassis with Tripod Thread and Stay-On Lens Covers: The body is constructed from magnesium alloy with rubber armour, providing structural rigidity and durability at lower weight than equivalent aluminium designs. The chassis is nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof, with a built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread and stay-on lens covers that remain attached to the binocular body during use.

About the Frontier ED X Binocular Series

The Frontier ED X series is Hawke's primary H7-tier binocular range, built on the H7 optical system with Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass, dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms, and phase correction as standard across all models. The series is designed for hunters, birders, nature observers, and outdoor enthusiasts who want high optical performance and broad versatility in a compact, lightweight format.

All Frontier ED X models feature water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses, a magnesium alloy chassis with nitrogen purging and waterproof sealing, replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops, stay-on lens covers, and a built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread. The series spans a range of magnification and objective size combinations — covering 8×32 and 10×32 in compact format, and 8×42 and 10×42 in full-size format — available in both green and grey finishes. The Frontier ED X sits one tier below the Frontier APO in the Hawke lineup, sharing the same prism and coating specification but without the APO lens correction system of the flagship model.

About the Model (Hawke Frontier ED X 8x32)

The Hawke Frontier ED X 8x32 is a compact, lightweight binocular designed for hunters, birders, and nature observers who require high optical performance in a format that can be carried comfortably for extended periods. The 8× magnification with a 32mm objective lens delivers a field of view of 135 metres at 1,000 metres and an apparent field of view of 62°, providing a broad, immersive sight picture for scanning and target acquisition. At 540 g and 100–118 mm wide × 120 mm high, it is one of the most compact and lightweight models in the Frontier ED X range.

The ED glass lens elements reduce chromatic aberration and colour fringing for a clean, neutrally rendered image, particularly on high-contrast subjects in bright outdoor conditions. The dielectric mirror coated BAK-4 roof prisms with phase correction maximise light transmission and maintain resolution across the full aperture. The water-repellent fully multi-coated lenses protect against rain and moisture while maintaining high transmission across the visible spectrum. The exit pupil of 4mm and 16mm of eye relief support comfortable use in typical outdoor lighting conditions, and the close focus distance of 2.5 metres extends usability to close-range subjects.

The scope is available in two colour finishes: Green (art. no. 38405) and Grey (art. no. 38406). The magnesium alloy chassis is nitrogen purged, waterproof, and fogproof. The replaceable twist-up eyecups with position stops accommodate both bare-eyed and eyeglass-wearing users. The built-in ¼"-20 UNC tripod mounting thread allows use on a tripod or binocular mount. Stay-on lens covers remain attached during use.

Most common questions (Q&A)

Need help? Not sure about something? Don't hesitate - ask our community! Our experienced community is here to help you with this question.

Hi, Is the eye relief in the Hawke Frontier EDX 8 x 32 acceptable for a person who wears spectacles and are there others in the pocket/compact range that are better ? Thanks.

by Richard

Please note that this binocular is suitable for people who wear glasses and for those that don't, since the eyecups are nicely adjustable. The eye relief of 16 mm is a common one amongst binoculars. In this price range, we would also recommend considering GPO Passion ED 10x32 binocular. Please note that Hawke Frontier ED X 8x32 is currently out of stock.
