The History of Interarms

The Interarms company which was first known under the name International Armament Corporation was established in 1953 by Sam Cummings in Alexandria, Virginia, setting up additional warehouses in Manchester, England, and other global locations shortly after the formation. Interarms initially specialized in acquiring and selling surplus weapons worldwide. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, it heavily influenced the American military weapons market and also acted as the primary agent for ArmaLite. They occasionally maintained offices in Panama and Buenos Aires in addition to their main headquarters.

The business started to grow drastically in 1957 when the company completed its first export of AR-10 rifles to Nicaragua. This was followed a year later, in 1958, by a large sale of 100 AR-10 rifles to Fulgencio Batista, the then-dictator of Cuba. In 1959, the shipment was seized by Fidel Castro's forces in Cuba and subsequently, lots of these rifles found their way into the hands of rebels in the Dominican Republic.

By 1968, the US Gun Control Act imposed restrictions on importing surplus military firearms, prompting Interarms to shift its focus to international commercial weaponry. Soon after that, they started to own the US franchise for Walther handguns, and in 1985, they produced 40,000 Walther PPK handguns a year in their Gadsden, Alabama, factory. Additionally, Interarms ran a 115-person production facility in Midland, Virginia where they manufactured SSA pistols under the Virginian Dragoon brand until it shuttered in 1985 due to a decline in the global arms market.

Primarily conducting business through catalog sales, Interarms not only resold weapons but also rebranded some of their firearms such as the Interarms Sporter, Interarms Custom Mark V and a bolt action rifle based on the Mauser 98, selling it as the Interarms Mark X.

The company was, for a while, the world's biggest supplier of small guns. Additionally, it provided thousands of American sportsmen, hunters and collectors with reasonably priced rifles, parts, and ammo. At the time of Sam Cummings' death in 1998, he was recognized as the world's largest private arms dealer, generating annual sales between $80 and $100 million. As the family members did not want to continue the business, the company was sold off in 1999.

Today, the remaining part of the Interarms company focuses mainly on selling parts, accessories and ammunition under its Arsenal Line Products brand in the USA and globally to ITAR-compliant customers. It is stated on their website that they are currently seeking a new licensee to continue importing affordable firearms for the US market.

Interarms Mark X Rifle Review

Interarms Mark X is a bolt-action rifle built around Mauser actions that were manufactured by the FN or former Zastava Arms factory in Yugoslavia. The creation of the X models involved a multi-step, international process. The barreled actions were then imported through Manchester, England. Once in the United States, specifically at Interarms in Alexandria, Virginia, the stocks were mounted onto these actions. Additionally, iron sights were added to the models that required them as part of their specifications.

The receivers of Mark X are forged and machined from a carbon-manganese alloy steel and the barrels are made of chrome vanadium steel. There were several versions of the Mark X, typically with the only differences being the stock quality and whether iron sights were installed on the barrel or not. While being based on the large-ring Mauser action, the Mark X rifle differs quite a lot in a few aspects. It retains some Mauser features such as the fixed ejector, dual opposing locking lugs on the bolt, and the claw extractor, however, the bolt itself is different from Mauser as it features a more sleek bolt shroud that is not equipped with a flag-type safety. Instead, there is a two-position safety lever placed on the right rear side of the receiver that locks the bolt and the trigger once engaged. The double-stack magazine can hold up to 5 rounds and is covered by a steel floorplate. There is also no stripper clip guide, but the tops of the receiver do come drilled and tapped to accept scope mounts. The trigger on the rifle is crisp and well-balanced but can be easily adjusted by the user for the weight of the pull. Usually, the late-production rifles were equipped with a rubber recoil pad at the end of the stock and had sling swivels installed.

During the time of their production, the Mark X models were regarded as well-built and accurate firearms and gained quite a popularity among the users.
