Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD 27-55x80 Angled Gen2

• Professional-Grade Optical System: Leupold’s optical design is tuned for strong light transmission, glare control, and high resolution, helping the image stay usable at dawn, dusk, and in harsh midday light when detail is easy to lose.
• 27-55x zoom range: The wide magnification span gives this spotting scope the flexibility to scan terrain at lower power and then move in for precise judging of antlers, impacts, or distant targets without changing equipment.
• 80 mm objective lens: The large front lens gathers more light and supports a brighter, more relaxed view, which matters when glassing for long periods or stretching magnification in fading light.
• Integrated Arca-Swiss-compatible base: Direct tripod compatibility speeds up setup, improves stability, and removes the need for extra adapter plates, which is especially useful for field shooting and backcountry observation.
• Waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof build: The rugged housing and argon-filled construction help the scope stay dependable through rain, temperature swings, and rough transport, so it is suited to hard field use.

About the Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD Series

Leupold introduced the SX-5 Santiam HD series in 2018 as a top-tier spotting scope family built for demanding field use. Positioned above more general-purpose observation models, the series is aimed at hunters, long-range shooters, guides, and serious field observers who need dependable optical performance when light is poor, distances are long, and conditions are not controlled. The line is offered in both angled and straight configurations, allowing users to choose the viewing style that best fits prone shooting, tripod use, or shared observation.

A defining feature of the series is Leupold’s Professional-Grade Optical System, which is designed to improve light transmission, reduce glare, and maintain the resolution needed to separate fine detail at distance. That matters when judging game, reading terrain, or spotting impacts against complex backgrounds. The series also reflects a practical field-first design philosophy, combining a smooth focusing system with an integrated Arca-Swiss-compatible tripod base for faster setup and steadier observation. Waterproof and fogproof construction rounds out the package, making the SX-5 Santiam HD line a strong fit for hunting optics and precision observation where reliability matters as much as image quality.

About the Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD 27-55x80 Angled Gen2

The Leupold SX-5 Santiam HD 27-55x80 Angled Gen2 is built for users who need one spotting scope to cover both wide-area observation and detailed long-range evaluation. Its 27-55x magnification range gives it a useful balance: lower power is practical for locating animals, scanning ridgelines, or following movement, while the upper end provides the reach needed for judging fine detail, checking shot placement, or reading distant targets. Paired with an 80 mm objective lens, the scope maintains a bright, capable image that supports extended glassing sessions and makes higher magnification more useful in real field conditions.

The angled eyepiece design is especially practical on a tripod. It allows a lower, more stable setup, works well from seated or prone positions, and makes shared viewing easier when several people use the same optic. A 17.00-19.20 mm eye relief range helps keep the view comfortable, including for many eyeglass wearers, while the 3.30 m close focus adds versatility for nearer observation. Leupold’s fully multicoated lenses and Professional-Grade Optical System support contrast and clarity across changing light, while the 24.33-34.99 m/1000m field of view gives enough width for efficient scanning before zooming in for detail.

Mechanically, this model is set up for hard use in the field. The integrated Arca-Swiss-compatible base simplifies tripod mounting, the fast focus system helps bring subjects into view quickly, and the argon-filled waterproof and fogproof construction is designed to keep the optic working through rain, cold mornings, and repeated temperature changes. At 1948.00 g and 399.00 mm long, it is substantial enough for stable observation while remaining practical for serious hunting and shooting use.

About Leupold

Leupold & Volpel was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1907 by Fred Leupold and Adam Volpel. The company remains family-owned and focuses on sport optics for hunting, shooting, and outdoor use. Its product range includes riflescopes, red dot sights, binoculars, spotting scopes, rangefinders, and thermal optics, giving the brand deep experience across the categories used by hunters and shooters in the field.

Leupold introduced its first riflescope, the Plainsman, in 1947, and later introduced the Duplex reticle in 1962, a design that became widely recognized in sporting optics. In 1968, the company moved its manufacturing plant and headquarters to Beaverton, Oregon, where Leupold & Stevens, Inc. is still headquartered. That long focus on practical field optics is reflected in products such as the VX-series, Mark-series, and spotting scopes like the SX-5 Santiam HD.
