Flir Scion PTM166 Product description

  • 640x512 Boson thermal core: The high-resolution VOx sensor shows small heat differences with more structure and cleaner target edges, which helps when scanning people, vehicles, or evidence in darkness, smoke, brush, or poor weather.
  • 60 Hz refresh rate: Fast image updates keep motion looking natural during tracking and panning, making the monocular easier to use for surveillance, search work, and moving observations.
  • Encrypted wireless streaming and onboard recording: The Scion PTM166 can transmit thermal video over Wi-Fi while also capturing stills and video, which supports documentation, coordination, and after-action review in the field.
  • Wide 31.00 ° field of view: The 13.80 mm lens gives broad area coverage for rapid scanning at short to medium distances, helping the user pick up movement quickly without tunneling into a narrow image.
  • Rugged handheld design: Waterproof, fogproof construction, nitrogen filling, and operation from -40℃ - 70℃ make it suitable for outdoor use where cold, rain, and repeated handling are part of normal duty.

About the Flir Scion PTM Series

The Flir Scion PTM Series was introduced for public safety professionals who need a handheld thermal monocular that can do more than simple observation. Positioned as a professional line above basic recreational thermal viewers, the series was developed for law enforcement surveillance, pursuits, evidence recovery, and search-and-rescue operations. It replaced FLIR’s earlier H-series monocular thermal cameras and brought the platform to the newer Boson thermal core.

A defining trait of the series is its combination of thermal imaging with field-ready connectivity. Scion PTM models support encrypted wireless thermal video streaming and can work with FLIR TruWITNESS, while also recording geotagged still images and video to internal storage or a microSD card. The range included both 320 × 256 and 640 × 512 detector options with multiple lens configurations, allowing users to choose between wider coverage and longer reach. Across the series, features such as picture-in-picture zoom, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth focus on practical information sharing rather than bench specifications alone. The handheld housing is built to an IP67-rated standard, reflecting a design meant for regular outdoor duty rather than occasional use.

About the Flir Scion PTM166

The Flir Scion PTM166 is the wide-view member of the series, built around a 640x512 thermal sensor, a 13.80 mm objective lens, and a broad 31.00 ° field of view. That combination makes it especially well suited to close- and mid-range thermal observation where rapid area coverage matters more than narrow long-range identification. For patrol work, perimeter checks, woodland searches, and scene assessment, the PTM166 lets the operator sweep large sectors quickly and maintain awareness of movement across the whole image.

The sensor uses a 12.00 μm pixel pitch and runs at 60.00 Hz, so the image remains fluid when following moving subjects or scanning from a vehicle or on foot. Detection range reaches 550.00 m, giving the monocular enough reach for practical outdoor surveillance while preserving the wider perspective that makes this model distinctive. The HD LCD display with 1280x960 resolution presents the thermal image with enough detail for comfortable prolonged viewing, and the digital magnification range up to 7.00 x helps inspect a heat source more closely after it has been detected.

In use, the PTM166 is designed as a working tool rather than a delicate observation device. It records 1280 x 960 still images and video, offers video output, and supports WiFi connectivity for sharing and streaming. Central focusing and central diopter adjustment keep handling straightforward, while the 565.00 g body remains manageable for handheld use. Waterproof and fogproof construction, nitrogen filling, tripod adaptability, and operation from -40℃ - 70℃ make it suitable for demanding outdoor conditions where thermal equipment may be exposed to rain, cold, and repeated transport.

About Flir

FLIR Systems was established in 1978 to develop infrared thermal imaging systems for airborne applications, and it grew into one of the best-known names in thermal sensing for commercial, industrial, and government use. The company specialized in systems that detect infrared energy emitted as heat, allowing users to find people, objects, and materials when visible-light optics are limited by darkness or obscurants. FLIR expanded its thermal expertise through acquisitions including Agema in 1998, Inframetrics in 1999, and Indigo Systems in 2003. In 2021, FLIR was acquired by Teledyne Technologies. Historically headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, United States, FLIR built a strong reputation in handheld thermal devices as well as larger sensing systems, and its outdoor monocular lines became widely used where reliable heat detection matters more than conventional image brightness.
