Design & Housing
In this case, the phrase: “don’t judge a book by its cover” does not apply, as you should most definitely judge a rangefinder by its design. The aluminum chassis dressed in rubber armoring makes for a durable optic with a firm grip. The rangefinder weighs 258 g and is tripod adaptable, which means you can get an even better-ranging performance that eliminates shaking of the hands. The eyecups are twist-adjustable, which is always a plus and the overall design of the device passes the test with flying colors. The two buttons (the menu and the measure button) are also easily accessible.
LOS or HCD?
Vortex Viper HD 3000 offers 2 ranging modes that the user can select in the menu:
- LOS (line of sight): shows a straight-line distance between the user (the device) and the target
- HCD (horizontal component distance): shows a corrected straight-line distance when the user (the device) is positioned at an angle
3000 Yards / 2743 Meters
The device features an HD optical system with a 7xmagnification. The red OLED display is illuminated for use in low-light settings. The maximum capable ranging distance in terms of reflective targets is 2743 m, for less reflective targets like deer – 1829 m. Vortex displays the distance in yards, but the user can select the option of meters in the menu. By holding the measure button, the device will enable scan mode – continuous measuring while scanning the area in real time.
First or Last Mode?
When it comes to target modes, Vortex offers 4 modes that the user can select in the menu:
- Normal mode: the user points at a target and receives the measured distance,
- First mode: the distance to the closest reflective target
- Last mode: the distance to the reflective target that is farthest away
- ELR/extended laser range: the user can measure the distance of targets at more extreme distances you can range targets at more extreme ranges
