Of all the models within the Vixen Ascot range, it is this 7x50 model that is the best at performing when the available light is far from ideal. This is because the combination of their 7x magnification and the large 50mm objective lenses produces a very large 7.1 mm exit pupil. The advantage of this is that even when your pupils are fully dilated in extremely low light situations, the 7.1mm shaft of light exiting the eyepieces is big enough so that it is able to supply your eyes with enough light for you to make out a bright image.
So whilst the power is fairly low and these are not designed to view deep space objects, It is because of this large exit pupil that 7x50 binoculars like these are a popular choice with stargazers wanting to scan the heavens and view entire constellations. It also makes them an excellent choice for wildlife observers, hunters and birdwatchers operating at closer ranges and at times or in places like thick forests where light conditions are poor.
These binoculars also produce a reasonably wide field of view which helps you see more of the sky at once and thus many constellations will be observable in their entirety without having to pan the view about. This is also good for scanning wide areas and in aiding you to rapidly lock onto and then follow fast moving birds, animals and other objects at close range.
The combination of the 17 mm of eye relief and the twist-up eyecups means that all users, but in particular eyeglass wearers have enough room to ensure that they are able to take in the full image without black rings forming on the edges of the view.
Note, at 10 meters, the closest focus distance on these binoculars is fairly long and thus these binoculars are not recommended should you like studying objects like butterflies at particularly close ranges.
Vixen's Ascot Binocular Series consists of a selection of traditional looking, but very ergonomic Porro prism shaped instruments. With a definite focus on astronomy, the wide selection of sizes and magnifications as well as many other features like fully multi-coated optics, wide fields of view and good eye relief also put the Ascot series forward as a great choice in a wide range of terrestrial uses as well.
