The smallest model in Steiner’s Safari Ultrasharp series, this 8x22 roof prism version can truly be classed as a pocket binocular.
To start with this binocular uses Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms that allow for a more compact binocular shape, then you also have the really small 22 mm objective lenses that keep the overall dimensions of the body are kept to a minimum. Finally this binocular uses the simple but ingenious double hinge body design that enables them to fold down into a very small compact shape allowing you to store them in just about any jacket or even shirt pocket when not in use.
For an 8x compact binocular, these have a nice wide field of view which is important as it helps make it much easier for you to quickly locate and then follow any fast moving action.
These core design features make this the ideal binocular for just about any hiker, backpacker, outdoor sports enthusiast and are a perfect companion on a birding holiday or walking safari.
Their small size and the fact that with the double hinge design, you can position the eyecups very close together should you wish, also makes these binoculars perfect for an older child or teenager with smaller hands and close-set eyes.
However, it is important to keep in mind that the downside to having such small lenses is that like the small windows in your house, they capture and let in far less light than binoculars with larger lenses. This is fine when there is plenty of available light during the day, but it does mean that they are far less capable in low light situations.
At 3 meters, the minimum focus distance on these is close enough should you also like to occasionally observe things like butterflies or birds on a nearby feeder. You could also pop them in your bag and take these binoculars along to the museum or art gallery the next time you visit.
