Sauer QD Hexalock Mount 30 mm, Sauer, Remington Details

About the company

Sauer & Sohn, frequently referred to as Sauer, is Germany's oldest firearms manufacturer and the second oldest in the world, founded in 1751. Even though they have been around for nearly three hundred years, they remain innovative. One of their most known firearms is Sauer 38H, an advanced semiautomatic pistol that was produced in great numbers – it featured a cocking/decocking lever.

About the rifle

Sauer 101 comes with the slogan “old school, new rules” which greatly describes the rifle. The bolt is designed traditionally while the barrel is attached to the receiver in a completely new, modern way. Sauer is known for the smoothness of its actions and Sauer 101 is no exception. There are two holes on each of the two mounting surfaces. Plenty of models are available: Select, Artemis, Forest, Forest XT, Classic, Classic XT, Scandic, Alaska and GTI.

The rifles are chambered for different calibers:

  • Select, Classic, Classic XT, Alaska, GTI: .22-250 Rem., .243 Win., 6.5x55 SE, .270 Win., 7x64, .308 Win., .30-06 Sprg., 8x57 IS, 9.3x62, 7 mm Rem. Mag., .300 Win. Mag., .338 Win. Mag.

  • Artemis, Scandic, Forest: .243 Win., .270 Win., .308 Win., 7x64, .30-06 Sprg., 8x57 IS, 9.3x62

  • Forest XT: .308 Win., .30-06 Sprg., 8x57 IS, 9.3x62

About the mounting system

  • Sauer QD Hexalock mounting system is ideal for Sauer 100 and 101 but it also fits other rifles with the same dimensions such as Mauser M18, Remington 700, Howa 1500, Mauser M96, Rosler Titan 16, Sabatti Rover LA and Haenel Jager 10.

  • Hexalock is a two-piece mount which means that is not as rigid as one-piece mounts.

  • It is very light and entirely made out of steel. It has a perfect return to zero which means that you do not have to repeat the zeroing process if you detach and reattach it.

  • Hexalock is quickly-detachable and very easy to handle.

Mounting instructions

  • Firstly, the user positions the bases on the appropriate places on the rifle’s receiver. Then, the bases are glued with a suitable adhesive (Loctite Blue). The Hexalock mounting bases must be aligned in the direction of the loading opening so that there is just a small gap.

  • Afterwards, the rings are placed on the Hexalock mounting bases. The user has to position the lever so that it points forward to the left. The stop pin must rest against the lower half of the mounting ring.

  • The user now loosens the screws that connect the upper and the lower part of the ring so that the upper part can be taken off. It is recommended that the rings are fastened to the telescopic sight and that a suitable adhesive is used to glue the screws.

  • The telescopic sight is then placed on the bottom parts of the rings. The user reinstalls the upper parts of the rings and tightens up the screws. There must be a same size gap on both sides between the upper and bottom parts of the rings. The screws have to be tightened with a force of 2.2 Nm.

It is important that the user is extremely precise when mounting Hexalock. It is very hard to horizontally align both rings and achieve the same height so it may be best to let a professional do the mounting. Even gunsmiths are sometimes having trouble achieving the right height and alignments.

Hexalock adjustment By

The system is good and well made but compared to others it isn't so easy to install or even use. I previously had EAW mounts on my Saur 200 which I feel are far superior. Currently my Hexalock front ring is loose and sloppy and I am struggling to understand how to adjust it so it fits snug like the rear ring mount. I have misplaced the 2mm metal rod but instructions are vague, ...likely written by an engineer who designed the system and not by someone who has to use it with no prior insight. It's unclear if the 2mm metal rod is used to turn an allen grub screw or apply pressure for some spring release or to adjust tension somehow. Without the metal rod and any clear instruction or diagram it is a guess at best. the frustrating part is that there are no YouTube videos on doing it and its not easy to get in contact with manufacturer. Not something you expect from a $450 scope mount.
