Scope mounts for 11 mm Dovetail

General description:

Dovetail is a unique design which allows installation of mounts on various rifles. Regardless of the rifle type and Dovetail width, this unique design is grooved onto the rifle's receiver, barrel or slide. Rifles are designed with different Dovetail widths. Most common are: 11 mm, 12 mm, 13.5 mm, 14.5 mm, 16.5 mm, 18 mm and 19 mm. 11 mm Dovetail is by far the most common among all other Dovetail designs. In terms of frequency and recognisability, it even surpasses Picatinny rails. 11 mm Dovetail can be found on small caliber (Rimfire) rifles, Air rifles and even some Center Fire rifles (sport, tactical). Most common Center Fire rifles with 11 mm Dovetail are Sig Sauer SSG 3000 (old models), Accuracy International, CZ 452, Mauser 201 and Keppeler sport rifles.

While 11 mm Dovetail can not be often found on Center Fire rifles, it is however dominating the market of Rimfire rifles. More than 90% of all Rimfire rifles feature 11 mm Dovetail designed on their receiver. The same also applies for Air Guns.

Physical properties and dimensions:

For a better hold on the rifle, upper side of the Dovetail is wider than lower side. Dovetail dimensions are measured at the upper side, which is wider, in our case 11 mm. Generally, Dovetail design offers a possiblity of mount installment without screws going into the receiver. Scope mounts simply clamp on the Dovetail, with sufficient force so there is no movement during recoil. Additionally, some 11 mm Dovetails are designed with a recoil lug, which offers even better resistance against recoil stop. This is most common with Center Fire rifles. For even more versatile and all-rounded mount installment, some rifles have bored holes in the receiver. On such rifles you can choose either to use Dovetail or holes in the receiver for mount installment. Dovetail slopes are at an angle of 30 degrees. For a more clear understanding, please see the attached image below. 11 mm Dovetail is designed in two length styles. A) Rifle with full length dovetail and B) Rifle with two separate dovetail parts

Rifle with 11mm Dovetail

Almost every rifle with 11 mm Dovetail usually has flat top receiver however, Anschutz rifles are exception to that. Anschutz rifles have round top receivers additionally. Anshutz-compatible mounts (made for a rounded top) will fit receivers of rifles with a flat top; however, mounts made for rifles with a flat receiver will not fit Anshutz's round receiver.

Fixed mounting options:

Fixed ring mounts – Two-Piece:

Fixed two-piece ring mounts cannot be detached from a rifle without the use of tools. They come at an affordable price and offer high reliability. Generally, they are not difficult to install on a rifle. Fixed means that the user cannot quickly detach and therefore switch scopes, which limits the usability of the rifle. Fixed ring mounts for 11 mm Dovetail are mostly produced in two fashions. A) direct rings with 11 mm clamps and B) advanced two part rings with separated base part, which clamps 11 mm Dovetail and ring which is attached to the base part. Simple rings are cheaper and easier to manufacture, while more advanced rings with separated ring and base part are more expensive, but usually offer a possibility to adjust scope's windage on the mount itself. Some manufacturers also produce one-piece Monoblock mounts for 11 mm Dovetails.

We can group fixed ring mounts for 11 mm Dovetail in the following groups:

Aluminium Two-Piece Direct Rings

Steel Two-Piece Direct Rings Two-Piece Rings (Two-Parts)

Fixed scope rail mounts - Two-Piece:

This is a more expensive option than buying fixed ring mounts however, it's still fairly cheap in comparison to other mounting solutions. If you own a riflescope with rail mounting option like, Zeiss ZM/VM rail, Swarovski SR rail, S&B Convex rail or LM rail then fixed scope rail mounts for 11 mm Dovetail are a good mounting alternative. Fixed rail mounts are reliable and lightweight, but user is unable to quickly switch between scopes on the rifle. Not many manufacturers make these, so there are fewer possibilities than amongst fixed ring mounts. Majority of mounts in this category is of two-part fashion. That means, that the mounts are composed of lower part (base part) that is mounted directly on the 11 mm Dovetail on the receiver, and upper part which holds the scope rail.

Fixed ring mounts - One-Piece:

Fixed one-piece ring mounts are divided into two separate groups. First group are lightweight Monoblock Mounts for Air Rifles and Rimfire rifles. They are very good at providing concentricness between both rings which results in no tension on the scope. The second group are Tactical Monoblock Mounts for Center-Fire rifles like Accuracy International, Kepeller rifles, etc. These mounts provide great robustness and stability.

Detachable Mounting options

When talking about Detachable Mounting options, this means these mounts are removable without tools or other instruments, additionally you can remove them simply with the use of bare hands. Usually, these mounts don't offer full repeatability. These mounting options offer great advantage in terms of transport. Riflescope and rifle can be transported individually. When reattaching the scope on the rifle, point of impact shifts up to 10 cm on 100 m. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Detachable Ring mounts:

Detachable Rings mounts are designed with simple metal levers, which are used for quick remove from the rifle. These mounts straightforwardly clamp on the 11 mm Dovetail. Final position of the levers can usually be switched without the change of the clamping force on the Dovetail. This offers a posibillity to adjust the position of the levers for a better visual appeal (both levers pointing in the same direction), once the mount is positioned and fixed on the 11 mm Dovetail. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Pivot mounts with rings:

A special kind of repeatable mounts are pivot mounts, also known as swing mounts. They offer 100 % repeatability and can be quickly and simply detached and reattached with the use of levers, buttons and screws, with no tools required. Pivot mounts are extremely durable, lightweight, compact and elegant. Their drawback is perhaps their price, which is considerably higher than the price of fixed mounts with rings and other mounting options. The installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith. Most of the times, pivot mounts are higher than 14 mm.

Pivot ring mounts guarantee 100 % repeatability and are available either as one-piece or two-piece versions. They allow simple installation of multiple riflescopes or red dot sights on a single rifle with great amount of interchangeability.

Pivot mounts with rails:

Pivot rail mounts are available in either one-piece or two-piece versions. They allow simple installation of multiple riflescopes or red dot sights on a single rifle with a great amount of interchangeability and 100 % repeatability. These mounts are almost the same as pivot mounts with rings but are intended for mounting of scopes with Zeiss ZM/VM rail, Swarovski SR rail, S&B Convex rail or traditional LM rail. Such setup tends to be a bit higher than with ring mounting, but this is usually not a problem for scopes with 50 or 56 mm objective lens. One-Piece Pivot mounts for rails clamp on the rail of the scope on almost it's entire length and provide very reliable mounting solution.

Mounting bases:

Picatinny rails:

The Picatinny rail is on a good way of becoming a global standard for mounting since it was invented in 1995. Developed on the Weaver template, the biggest advantage of the Picatinny rail is the usage across its entire length, unlike Weaver which has predesignated slots for mounting, limiting its usability and versatility. Ease of use and interchangeability are also its assets. Picatinny has slots evenly placed, namely exactly 5.23 mm one from the other and 3 mm deep. Because of this, the mounting is identical on all firearms using the Picatinny standard. Picatinny rails are usually available with 0 MOA or 20 MOA, 28 MOA, 30 MOA, 40 MOA and 45 MOA inclinations. Although, the most common are 0 and 20 MOA versions. 20 MOA inclination enables user to have more elevation adjustment availiable on the riflescope additionally, better long range performance. Picatinny rail can accommodate all types of mounts, also those designed for Weaver standard.

For 11 mm Dovetails, Picatinny rails are basically adapters. Please see the option below.

Adapters:

Adapters offer difference of height and mounting solutions. For example, upper side of the adapter has a Picatinny rail installed, while bottom side attaches to Dovetail additionally, it also raises mounting surface.

Risers:

Risers offer difference only in height meanwhile, mounting solution stays the same. For example, bottom side clamps the 11 mm Dovetail, while upper side also offers a posibillity for 11 mm Dovetail installment.
