Scope mounts for 16.5 mm Dovetail

General description:

Dovetail is a unique design which allows installation of mounts on various rifles. Regardless of the rifle type and dovetail width, this unique design is notched onto the rifle's receiver, barrel or slide. Rifles are designed with different dovetail widths. Most common are: 11 mm, 12 mm, 13.5 mm, 14.5 mm, 16.5 mm, 18 mm and 19 mm. Although 16.5 mm dovetail is not as common and recognisable on rifles as 11 mm dovetail. If we just name some of the most recognisable rifles with 16.5 mm dovetail, we can quickly deduct that this design is nonetheless spread world-wide. In category of 16.5 mm dovetail rifles we name: Tikka T3, Sako TRG (all models), Sako M10, CZ 527, Brno Fox and some older Brno rifles. Please note, that both 16 mm and 17 mm dovetail designs fit into 16.5 mm dovetail category.

We can find 16.5 mm dovetail also on some centerfire rifles and competition rifles.

Properties and dimensions:

For a better hold on the rifle, upper side of the Dovetail is wider than lower side. Dovetail dimensions are measured at the upper side, which is wider, in our case 16.5 mm. Generally, dovetail design offers a possiblity of mount installment without screws going into the receiver. Scope mounts simply clamp on the dovetail, with sufficient force so there is no movement during recoil. Additionally, some 16.5 mm dovetails are designed with recoil lug, which offers even better recoil stop. For even more versatile and all-rounded mount installment, Tikka T3 rifles have bored receivers. On such rifles you can choose either to use dovetail or holes in the receiver for mount installment. 16.5 mm dovetail is designed in two length styles. A) Rifle with full length dovetail (perfect example is Tikka T3 and B) Rifle with two separate dovetail parts (perfect example is CZ 527). For this particular reason, mounts for CZ 527 usually have front ring with a backwards extension.
Recoil groove on Tikka T3 for example is located on top of the rifle's receiver in between mounting holes. As for CZ 527, recoil groove is located on the rear mounting surface, and is etched on the left side of the dovetail. For a more clear understanding, please see the attached image below.

Fixed mounting options:

Fixed ring mounts – Two-Piece:

Fixed two-piece ring mounts cannot be detached from a rifle without the use of tools. They come at an affordable price and offer high reliability. Generally, they are not difficult to install on a rifle. Fixed means that the user cannot quickly detach and therefore switch scopes, which limits the usability of the rifle. Fixed ring mounts for 16.5 mm Dovetail are mostly produced in two fashions. A) direct rings with 16.5 mm clamps and B) advanced two part rings with separated base part, which clamps 16.5 mm Dovetail and ring which is attached to the base part. Simple rings are cheaper and easier to manufacture, while more advanced rings with separated ring and base part are more expensive, but usually offer a possibility to adjust scope's windage on the mount itself. For 16.5 mm Dovetail, Fixed mounts are manufactured from aluminium and steel. Some manufacturers also produce one-piece Monoblock mounts for 16.5 mm Dovetails.

We can group fixed ring mounts for 16.5 mm Dovetail in the following groups:

Aluminium Two-Piece Direct Rings

Steel Two-Piece Direct Rings

Two-Piece Rings (Two-Parts)

Fixed scope rail mounts - Two-Piece:

This is a more expensive option than buying fixed ring mounts however, it's still fairly cheap in comparison to other mounting solutions. If you own a riflescope with rail mounting option like, Zeiss ZM/VM rail, Swarovski SR rail, S&B Convex rail or LM rail then fixed scope rail mounts for 16.5 mm Dovetail are a good mounting alternative. Fixed rail mounts are reliable and lightweight, but user is unable to quickly switch between scopes on the rifle. Not many manufacturers make these, so there are fewer possibilities than amongst fixed ring mounts. Majority of mounts in this category is of two-part fashion. For 16.5 mm Dovetail, Fixed mounts are manufactured from aluminium and steel. That means, that the mounts are composed of lower part (base part) that is mounted directly on the 16.5 mm Dovetail on the receiver, and upper part which holds the scope rail.

Fixed ring mounts - One-Piece:

Fixed one-piece ring mounts are divided into two separate groups. First group are Hunting Monoblock Mounts, which are appealing and elegant. The second group are Tactical Monoblock Mounts, which are more robust, heavy and can whitstand far more intensive shock.

Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Detachable Ring mounts:

Detachable Rings mounts are designed with simple metal levers, which are used for quick remove from the rifle. These mounts straightforwardly clamp on the 16.5 mm Dovetail. Final position of the levers can usually be switched without the change of the clamping force on the Dovetail. This offers a posibillity to adjust the position of the levers for a better visual appeal (both levers pointing in the same direction), once the mount is positioned and fixed on the 16.5 mm Dovetail. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Mounting bases:

Picatinny rails:

The Picatinny rail is on a good way of becoming a global standard for mounting since it was invented in 1995. Developed on the Weaver template, the biggest advantage of the Picatinny rail is the usage across its entire length, unlike Weaver which has predesignated slots for mounting, limiting its usability and versatility. Ease of use and interchangeability are also its assets. Picatinny has slots evenly placed, namely exactly 5.23 mm one from the other and 3 mm deep. Because of this, the mounting is identical on all firearms using the Picatinny standard. Picatinny rails for 16.5 mm Dovetail are available with 0 MOA or 20 MOA inclinations. 20 MOA inclination enables user to have more elevation adjustment availiable on the riflescope additionally, better long range performance. Picatinny rail can accommodate all types of mounts, also those designed for Weaver standard. For 16.5 mm Dovetail, Picatinny Rails are mostly fixed with screws.

For 16.5 mm Dovetails, Picatinny rails are basically adapters which convert 16.5 mm Dovetail to Picatinny. Please see the option below.
