Scope Mounts for 14.5 mm Dovetail

General description:

Dovetail is a special platform on rifle's receiver, which enables installment of various mounts. This unique design is notched onto the rifle's receiver, barrel or slide. The most common and recognisable is 11 mm dovetail design. 14.5 mm Dovetail can be mostly found on Czech drop barrel rifles. For example: Brno 500, 611, ZH, Super, Browning Erice and of course many others. Dovetail design on these rifles is grooved on the rear top end of the barrel, with the length of approximatelly 4 cm.

Physical properties and dimensions:

For a better hold on the rifle, upper side of the dovetail is wider than lower side. Dovetail dimensions are measured at the upper side, which is wider, in our case 14.5 mm. Generally, Dovetail design offers a possiblity of mount installment without screws going into the receiver. Scope mounts simply clamp on the dovetail, with sufficient force so there is no movement during recoil. Additionally, all 14.5 mm Dovetails are designed with a recoil lug, which offers even better resistance against recoil stop. Recoil stop groove is canted on the left side of the Dovetail. Dovetail slopes are at an angle of 30 degrees. In general, rifles with 14.5 mm Dovetail are very similar to break barrel rifles with 12 mm Dovetail, which are even more common. Fixed mounting options:

Fixed ring mounts – Two-Piece:

Fixed two-piece ring mounts cannot be detached from a rifle without the use of tools. They come at an affordable price and offer high reliability. Generally, they are not difficult to install on a rifle. Fixed means that the user cannot quickly detach and therefore switch scopes, which limits the usability of the rifle. Fixed ring mounts for 14.5 mm Dovetail are produced in two fashions. A) direct rings with 14.5 mm clamps and B) advanced two part rings with separated base part, which clamps 14.5 mm Dovetail and ring which is attached to the base part. Simple rings are cheaper and easier to manufacture, while more advanced rings with separated ring and base part are more expensive, but usually offer a possibility to adjust scope's windage on the mount itself. However please note, that fixed Two-Piece ring mounts for 14.5 mm Dovetail are not suitable for break barrel rifles from the previous picture. Such rings are only made for some rare Czech small caliber rifles which have 14.5 mm Dovetail notched into rifle's receiver.

Usually, these mounts don't offer full repeatability. These mounting options offer great advantage in terms of transport. Riflescope and rifle can be transported individually. When reattaching the scope on the rifle, point of impact shifts up to 10 cm on 100 m. It can also shift much less. For 14.5 mm Dovetail, there are only one-piece Detachable Mounts availiable. Detachable mounts which are designed with levers are repeatable, while the ones designed with screws are usually non – repeatable. Usually, Detachable Mounting options are designated as QR (quick release) or QD (quick detachable) abbreviations.

Detachable Ring mounts:

There are four different Scope Rail mounts available. Which are: LM rail, Zeiss ZM/VM rail, Swarovski SR rail and S&B Convex rail. Ordinarily, they are designed with windage adjustment incorporated in their design and are commonly more expensive. Repeatable detachable mounts

Repeatable mounts are the most sophisticated mounts available and their main purpose is the removal of the telescopic sight from the rifle and mount it back again without the need of zeroing it all over. Mounting bases:

Picatinny rails:

The Picatinny rail is on a good way of becoming a global standard for mounting since it was invented in 1995. Developed on the Weaver template, the biggest advantage of the Picatinny rail is the usage across its entire length, unlike Weaver which has predesignated slots for mounting, limiting its usability and versatility. Ease of use and interchangeability are also its assets. Picatinny has slots evenly placed, namely exactly 5.23 mm one from the other and 3 mm deep. Because of this, the mounting is identical on all firearms using the Picatinny standard. Picatinny rail for 14.5 mm Dovetail is usually designed for Red Dot Sight. Additionally, they can accommodate Night Vision, Thermal and Digital optics.

For 14.5 mm Dovetails, Picatinny rails are basically adapters. Please see the option below. They are mostly meant for Red Dot Sights and not mounting of heavy scopes.

Risers:

Risers offer difference only in height meanwhile, mounting solution stays the same. For example, bottom side clamps the 14.5 mm Dovetail, while upper side also offers a posibillity for 14.5 mm Dovetail installment. Riser for 14.5 mm Dovetail are mostly meant for small caliber rifles.

Adapters:

Adapters offer difference of height and mounting solutions. For example, upper side of the adapter has a Picatinny rail installed, while bottom side attaches to Dovetail additionally, it also raises mounting surface. Riser for 14.5 mm Dovetail are mostly meant for small caliber rifles.
