Vixen Foresta Binoculars

The Foresta series from Japanese brand Vixen Optics contains a selection of high-end Porro prism binoculars. Their use of a tough chassis, hardwearing exterior, and good quality optics will appeal to the adventurous nature lover, but at the same time, many models will also excel for uses that range from backyard birding to astronomy.

Apart from compacts, the Foresta series covers all the main sizes, from the portable 32 mm versions to the large 50 mm options designed to excel in low light conditions. The standard sized 42 mm options are ideal for general use and strike a good compromise between portability and light gathering ability.

Important Features

Unlike cheaper binoculars that use polycarbonate plastic, Vixen Foresta binoculars have a tough, long-lasting die-cast aluminum chassis designed to thrive under the harshest of conditions. This chassis is also fully sealed, protecting them from water in wet conditions and dust when it is dry. The dry nitrogen gas filled interior also prevents the inner glass surfaces from fogging which can happen when exposing unprotected binocular to rapid temperature changes. For example: When you first take your binoculars outside the house on a cold winters morning. Further protection to these optics is provided by the tough rubber armor exterior, which also makes for a good anti-slip surface to grasp onto, no matter the weather. Focusing is achieved by turning the large, easy to reach centrally positioned focus wheel and with a smooth mechanism, this is very easy, even with one finger. These binoculars also feature a diopter adjuster. Located on the right eyepiece, it enables you to make up for any differences in the strength of vision between your left and right eyes. Vixen’s hinge lock system allows for easy interpupillary distance adjustment and twist-up eyecups ensure that you are able to position your eyes correctly behind the ocular lenses to achieve the full image without black rings forming on the edges of the view. All Vixen Foresta binoculars are tripod adaptable, which for long periods of observation and astronomy, in particular, is very useful.

Optical Properties

These Vixen binoculars are fully multi-coated which means that all air-to-glass surfaces throughout the entire optical system have been treated with multiple layers of an anti-reflection material. The result is a higher level of light transmission and thus a brighter, superior quality image.

Made from high-quality BaK-4 optical glass, the Porro prisms contribute to the iconic and body shape with the objective lenses positioned further apart than the eyepieces. Whilst not as compact as the straight through design of a roof prism binocular, it is very ergonomic, has the advantage of delivering a slightly better stereoscopic image and the prism does not require expensive mirror coatings to achieve maximum light transmission.

Accessories

Designed to thrive in the wilderness, all Vixen Foresta binoculars come with an outdoor hiking-style carry case that is comfortable to carry and offers a good level of protection to your instrument. Also included is a padded neck strap, covers for the objective lenses, a rain-guard for the ocular lenses and a cleaning cloth.
