Nikon Monarch 5 Binoculars

Description of Nikon MONARCH 5 Binoculars

The new upgraded MONARCH 5 uses ED glass that combines the high-quality optical performance, great ergonomics and resilience. There are six models available, among which are three all-round models and three are low-light binoculars. These roof prism binoculars are perfect for wide varieties of use, from hunting, birdwatching, mountaineering and also astronomy and marine applications. With the MONARCH 5 you get to choose between three extreme long range binoculars, that will open your eyes to incredible scenery and allow you to scan the larger open areas.

Basic Features

MONARCH 5 offers amazing ergonomics. With straight-through design and small dimensions, they are very comfortable to hold in hands and carry for longer periods of time. The top-hinge helps with a great weight distribution and leans the binoculars more towards the face when you hold them in your hands. The housing is made out of ultra-light polycarbonate material, which is almost weightless, but still durable enough to withstand major impacts. MONARCH 5 binoculars are enclosed in rubber armouring with rugged surface to give you a nice firm grip for careless viewing. The other great feature is that MONARCH 5 binoculars are fully watertight, which means they are able to withstand even the most severe weather conditions. This corrosion-free feature also prolongs the life of these binoculars. The construction is also fog-free thanks to Nitrogen gas filing that eliminates internal condensation that might occur in early mornings or late evenings and prevents the molding of the interior.

Optical Properties

Nikon MONARCH 5 series offers great optical performance thanks to the amazing Nikon technology. The lenses are upgraded, using the extra-low dispersion glass. This eliminates chromatic aberration and gives exceptionally sharp view-through, with the help of fully multi-coated system that helps with superior light transmittance. Nikon didn’t forget about prisms, which are phase corrected and also consist of dielectric prism coatings. This provides you with better resolution and extremely natural and vivid colors. There is a large central focusing knob integrated into the bridge that gives you quick and smooth adjustments. Together with right-eye diopter you get to have extremely razor-sharp view. Let’s not forget about multi-positioned eyecups that are softly tethered for comfortable observations but allow you to get a perfect eye-relief even if wearing eye glasses.

Accessories

The MONARCH 5 comes in a small case where you can store them. The neckstrap for carrying is very thick and comfortable and offers a click lock mechanism for quick removal of binoculars. The eyecup and objective lens covers are also a part of the accessories.

Astronomy binoculars are often said to be the best first telescopes to slowly introduce you to sky gazing and astronomy. With wider field of view than telescopes they allow you to scan the whole sky at once and easily track the observing object. They are more portable, lighter, less bulky and do not require a tripod because lower magnifications bring less shaky images and easier handling. The main advantage of astronomy binoculars is that you are allowed to see with both of the eyes, giving you more natural viewing and easier tracking of the objects - two barrels collect more light. An important factor in astronomy binoculars is the size of the objective lens as they are mostly used in low light situations (at twilight or in pitch dark). The bigger the lens, more light is let through. Increase in light, high quality optics and coatings all contribute to brighter and more detailed image. Astro binoculars may be only water resistant which is enough of a feature to protect your binoculars before dew and moisture occurring at night. Waterproof and fog-proof features just add to the price. Astronomy binoculars may not be a replacement to a telescope, they are simply an addition.

Features of Astro binoculars

  • (+) bigger lens diameters
  • (+) wide field of view
  • (+) portable
  • (+) suitable for low light observations
  • (-) heavier in comparison to other binoculars

A few reasons why the astronomy binoculars are (sometimes) better than the telescope

Astronomy binoculars are suitable for anyone who does not want a large and clumsy telescope. For the telescope, you will spend a lot more time if you want to set it up for the observation. Astronomy binoculars are smaller and have smaller magnification, but for this reason, they are extremely compact and portable. They also have a much larger field of view than the telescope and because of the use of both eyes, observation is much more natural and comfortable. They capture a larger amount of light and, consequently, the image we see is much brighter. It is important that we choose a magnification below 12x if we want to hold the binoculars in our hands and observe; otherwise, they will need to be mounted on a tripod. With astronomy binoculars, you can see a larger number of stars and clearer planets, however, for the details and even more focused observation, choose a telescope.
