One of the most important factors to consider when mounting a scope on a Savage Model 110 is whether it has a flat-back or round-back receiver.

If you’ve done any sort of research for scope mounts for Savage Model 110, chances are that you’ve noticed that manufacturers often specify if the product is made for a flat-back or round-back receiver.

But what do these terms mean and how do they affect the scope mounting process?

Background of Savage Model 110 and the Introduction of AccuTrigger

Savage started producing the Model 110 in 1958 and for nearly 45 years, the rifle remained relatively unchanged. However, in 2002, Savage Arms introduced the AccuTrigger, and from 2003 onward every Model 110 was made with this new triggering system which brought about some significant changes.

Most notably, the action had to undergo some modifications in order to accommodate this new technology, and as a result, the receiver was also changed.

The design of Savage’s patented AccuTrigger (source: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BwSpbbhIIAE0hUO.jpg:large)

Flat-Back Savage Model 110

Before the introduction of the AccuTrigger, every Savage Model 110 had a receiver that was rounded at the front and flat at the back. This type of receiver is known as a “flat-back” receiver, and this is why we sometimes refer to the old 110 models as “flat-back Savage Model 110”.

Some other names for this model include “pre-2003 Savage Model 110”, “flat-rear Savage Model 110”, and “pre-AccuTrigger Savage Model 110”.

Round-Back Savage Model 110

However, with the introduction of the AccuTrigger, the receiver shape was changed. Now, the receiver is rounded both at the front and at the back. This type of receiver is known as a “round-back” receiver, and the model is known as the “round-back Savage Model 110”.

Same as the flat-back counterpart, the round-back Model 110 also has a few different names: “post-2003 Savage Model 110”, “AccuTrigger Savage Model 110”, “round-rear Savage Model 110”, etc.

It is essential to know which type of receiver your Savage Model 110 has before purchasing a scope mount since mounts that fit on the round-back Model 110 will not fit on the flat-back receiver and vice-versa.

How to know if you have a Flat-Back or Round-Back Savage Model 110

There are two ways to easily tell if your Savage Model 110 is “flat-back” or “round-back”:

1) Inspect the Receiver

Simply take a look at the rifle and observe if the surface at the back of the receiver is flat. The distinction between flat and round receivers is relatively simple and you should be able to tell them apart.

A round-back Model 110 will have the receiver rounded both at the front and at the back, and it will also look the same on both ends.

The flat-back model, however, will be rounded only in the front and noticeably flatter at the back.

You can help yourself with the image below. The upper half of the image shows a round-back, and the bottom half shows a flat-back receiver of Savage Model 110:

Round-back Model 110 on the top and flat-back Model 110 below it (source: https://savagearms.com/blog?p=how-to-find-the-right-bases-for-a-savage-centerfire-rifle)

2) Inspect the Trigger

If your Savage Model 110 came with an AccuTrigger, then it is most definitely a round-back model, and you will only be able to mount scope mounts made for a round-back receiver on it.

On the other hand, if your model doesn’t feature the AccuTrigger, it is a flat-back model, and you will need to find older flat-back scope mounts for it.

This is how a rifle with an AccuTrigger will look like:

Savage Model 110 Lightweight Storm with the AccuTrigger (Source: Savage Arms)

Contact us for Help

If you still aren’t sure whether your Savage Model 110 is “flat-back” or “round-back”, contact us at info@optics-trade.eu and we will gladly help you out.

To make the whole process a bit faster, we kindly ask you to specify the name of your model in your mail and provide an image of the rifle’s receiver.

When mounting a scope mount on Savage Model 110, you need to know whether it is a round-back or flat-back.
