Hello and welcome to another episode of Optics Trade Debates. This video is dedicated to one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from the customers who purchased Holosun red dots. To be specific, they often wonder: Why is the objective lens on my red dot sight TILTED? We are here to answer that.
First of all, a tilted objective lens is not an error and neither is Holosun the only company that chose to implement this feature.
The truth is that all red dots must have their objective lens somewhat tilted as a part of the design if they wish to function correctly.
The lens has to be installed at an angle that allows for the light beam from the LED emitter to bounce off the inside surface and be reflected to the user, regardless of the position of their eye. That means that the tilted lens functions a bit like a mirror.
Tilted objective lens ensures a parallax-free red dot sight. Even if the device is wavering around in the user’s field of view, it remains 100% accurate when taking the shot.
The LED diode project the illuminated dot onto the tilted glass surface. From there, it reflects into the user’s eye.
The Holosun design is a bit steeper than with many and this angle allows for the LED emitter to have an extremely low profile. With that, it does not intrude into the inside of the tube and obstructs the user’s view. The angle of the objective lens also reduces reflection to the target.
A lot of people are not aware of this fact and believe that there is something wrong with their device and the objective lens came damaged or installed incorrectly. That’s definitely not the case. Every Holosun red dot sight product, from the smallest ‘micro’ models, big ‘tube’ ones to the full-sized red dots, has a tilted objective lens.
Other brands’ red dots work the same. The only semi-exceptions are red dot sights that have one additional protecting glass in front of the tilted objective lens. That way the user just can’t see it.
Perhaps the main motivator behind filming this debate is to inform our customers about the reasoning, the function behind a tilted objective lens.
At Optics Trade, we regularly receive questions and even warranty claims regarding this issue that isn’t an issue at all. We can only imagine the number of similar messages addressed to the manufacturers like Holosun directly. In fact, after a quick perusal of their official webpage, we noticed that this is the first question answered under their FAQ section.
Again, if the objective lens on your red dot sight is tilted rest assured that this is due to design and not defect.
