Where Are Schmidt & Bender Riflescopes Made?

Introduction

Schmidt & Bender or S&B is a renowned Germany-based optics manufacturer that specializes in high-end rifle scopes, reticles, turrets, and related accessories for hunting, shooting competitions, law enforcement agencies, and armed forces around the world. The company is recognized for the exceptional quality and performance of its product line, the reason for which is the commitment to the use of high-quality raw materials and excellent production methods. S&B has remained a family-owned business since its inception in 1957.

The company has its headquarters in Biebertal, Germany, where most of the rifle scopes series are manufactured. S&B is one of the few remaining European companies that produce all their products in-house in Germany and Hungary. With a vast history of over 60 years, the company has come a long way from producing fixed-magnification telescopic sights for hunters in the 1960s to becoming one of the most sought-after rifle scopes for a range of applications, including military surveillance, law enforcement, shooting competitions, and professional hunting.

History

Schmidt & Bender was founded as a small workshop in 1957 by two instrument makers, Helmut Schmidt, and Helmut Bender. Initially, the workshop was set in a small laundry room in Biebertal-Fellingshausen with minimal tools and most production operations were carried out manually. The first scope with variable magnification, 1¾-6x36 was unveiled in 1974, and the company received an order for a total of 500 6x32 rifle scopes from the Finnish army in 1978. Seeing a rise in demand, the main factory was expanded to increase the production capacity and the manpower was increased to 40 workers in 1988.

In 1992, the owners of S&B acquired Hungarian Optical Works (MOM), a government-owned manufacturer of precision optics located in Budapest, Hungary. Subsequently, a subsidiary of the company by the name of Schmidt & Bender Hungaria Optik GmbH was established. The factory in Budapest was tasked with the production of Klassik rifle scopes along with optical components for other series offered by the company. To catch up with the high workload, this factory accommodated a manpower of 80 workers.

In 1993, a subsidiary of S&B was launched in the United States as Schmidt & Bender Inc., which was established to monitor and facilitate the marketing and sales of high-end rifle scopes in the North American region. The 1990s was the era of success for the company because a number of developments took place for the brand during this time. In 1994, the company’s first riflescope with reticle illumination was unveiled, which was followed by PM Sniper rifle scopes in 1997. Other advances in the following years include a side focus adjustment, ISO 9000 certification, flash dot illumination, and 9x optical zoom.

Production Facilities

Although Schmidt & Bender has a presence in all major regions in the world, the production is strictly carried out in Germany and Hungary.

Biebertal, Germany

The business in Biebertal, Germany was established in 1957 as a small workshop for the production of hunting scopes. Manufacturing operations were carried out manually in the beginning, but as demand for the scopes grew, a proper production facility was established to accommodate the increase in production. In the 1980s, S&B received multiple contracts for military-grade rifle scopes from various armed forces in Europe. In 1988, the factory saw a major expansion in which the manpower was significantly increased to 40 workers. Most of the production is still carried out by hand, which is why a limited number of scopes are produced each year.

Budapest, Hungary

Hungarian Optical Works (Magyar Optikai Művek) was a government-owned company in Budapest, Hungary that produced sports optics products of high quality and precision. MOM was a pioneer in the production of rifle scopes and its acquisition helped S&B improve its manufacturing methods, built quality, and optical performance significantly. Soon a subsidiary, Schmidt & Bender Hungaria Optik GmbH, was established in Budapest to share the workload of the factory in Germany. In 1992, the factory employed over 80 workers who produced parts for various rifle scope variants offered by Schmidt & Bender. As of 2021, the Hungaria Klassik series of S&B rifle scopes is produced at the Hungary location.
