History

Meopta® Optika was founded in 1947 as a result of the merger of two Czechoslovakia-based optics manufacturers, namely C.P. Goerz in Bratislava and Optikotechna in Prerov.

P. Goerz

Established during the late 1800s, C. P. Goerz was a Vienna-based manufacturer of optical devices. In 1907, the company established a production facility in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia for optomechanical products that were initially geared towards Austria-Hungary’s naval forces. The company produced military-grade products throughout the First World War for various armed forces, but soon after the war ended, changed its approach towards the business. Beginning in 1919, C. P. Goerz entered the civilian market when it started producing optical devices, such as compass, binoculars, film cameras, magnifying glasses, field glasses, and mechanical instruments, including speakers, manometers, refractometers, and mechanical alarm clocks.

Optikotechna

Optikotechna was founded by Engr. Alois Benes in Prerov, Czechoslovakia as a producer of optical components in 1933. In the initial years, the company offered lenses and optical condensers, but by 1937, the production had gradually switched to mainstream optical devices, such as composite lenses, binoculars, rifle scopes, transparent-slide projects, and personal cameras. In no time, Optikotechna had added several factories in the nearby regions to accommodate the rising demand for its products. The success was short-lived and the manufacturing business had to be surrendered when Czechoslovakia was invaded in 1939 during Second World War. During the German occupation, the company was forced to manufacture military-grade optical instruments for the German army, which included riflescopes, binoculars, rangefinders, and periscopes. This continued until the end of WW2, after which the company was nationalized.

Formation of Meopta® Optika

In 1947, Optikotechna was merged with C. P. Goerz to become Meopta® Optika. Since its inception, the company has offered civilian-targeted products, particularly rifle scopes, spotting scopes, binoculars, hand-held cameras, enlargers, video cameras, film projectors, and others. During the Cold War era, the company produced military-grade optical devices to the point where it represented 70% of the company’s business. The production shifted back to civilian products in 1989, which was followed by the privatization of the company in 1991.

Currently, Meopta’s main factory lies in Prerov, Czech Republic that covers a 135,000 m2 area with a large manufacturing floor that spans over 26,000 m2. Since becoming private, the company has garnered a significant following among sport optics fanatics. The majority shareholder of the company established a separate company in the US, New York, by the name Tyrolit, but renamed it to Meopta®, USA Inc. in 2005.

The manufacturing process for rifle scopes at Meopta® is divided into three main stages:

Research & Development Stage

Research & Development is an integral component of all manufacturing processes everywhere without which it would be impossible to create innovative products. The R&D activities at Meopta® are performed to complement the ongoing manufacturing processes for all products through continuous improvement, right from the start to finish.

The R&D activities include the following operations:

Mechanical Design

The mechanical design of optical devices, especially rifle scopes, plays a crucial role in protecting delicate optical components, such as lenses, from high-caliber recoils. Another function of a well-designed rifle scope housing is to provide accurate positioning for lenses and adjustment mechanisms, without which a rifle scope will not perform as desired. The design team at Meopta® pays special attention to requirements of surface finish, dimensions, and geometric tolerances. All of this is achieved using world-renowned CAD packages, particularly Creo Parametric software from PTC.

Optical Design

Optical Design is a specialized field of physics that deals with the optical properties of materials. At Meopta®, researchers study the effects of physical design, material, and optical coating to corresponding optical properties like light transmission, refractive index, reflection, and others. Software applications that are specially used for this purpose are Zemax and Oslo.

Structural Calculations

One of the main stages of R&D is to analyze and validate innovative mechanical and optical designs. Engineers achieve this by applying real-world loads, including thermal shock, vibrations, and impact loads on Finite rifle scope assembly designs using the Finite Element Analysis technique. By using PTC Creo Simulate, it becomes particularly easy for engineers to identify key design areas that require modifications. Additionally, engineers can play with the mechanical design of rifle scopes to create lightweight designs without affecting mechanical strength.

Manufacturing stage

The R&D stage goes hand-in-hand with the manufacturing stage, which converts the latest innovations in optics design into high-quality rifle scopes with outstanding optical and mechanical performance. The manufacturing processes that take place at Meopta’s Prerov site include:

Meopta Meopro Riflescopes

Meopta Meopro Riflescopes

Precise machining and material selection

Riflescopes are one of the most complicated optical devices in existence today since their design requires consideration of multiple factors, especially seamless zoom adjustment, shock proofing, water, and fog proofing. Seeing these critical requirements, rifle scope manufacturing requires precise machining equipment. At present, Meopta’s production floor is jam-packed with state-of-the-art CNC machinery from distinguished brands. These include precision milling centers with up to 5 controlled axes, high-speed lathe machines, Electric Discharge Machines, and equipment for grinding, bending, soldering, threading, and honing equipment.

Raw materials that are suitable for rifle scopes and binoculars are required to have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Materials that fit this description include Aluminum Alloys, Titanium, Stainless steel, and high-strength polymer plastics. The range of manufacturing equipment available at Meopta® is more than capable of machining such materials with ease.

Heat Treatment

Heat Treatment is a combination of various processes that are designed to treat raw materials using high temperatures. The reasons for heat-treating materials can vary, but the most important is the improvement of hardness and machinability and relief of residual stresses. The on-site heat treatment facility at Meopta® features a temperature-controlled furnace with an upper-temperature limit of up to 1,3000C. It is purpose-built for performing annealing, duralumin hardening, normalizing, gas quenching, carbonitriding, and tempering operations on Aluminum Alloys, Titanium, and Stainless steel material.

Metal Surface Coating

No matter how a riflescope is designed, the contact between metal and glass cannot be completely eliminated. Since lenses are delicate and sensitive to touch, any surface distortion on the internal surface of the riflescope tube can damage the lenses and render an otherwise expensive scope useless. Metals are inherently prone to corrosion and surface scratches. To solve this problem, engineers at Meopta® process metal surfaces through a combination of operations, such as anodizing, electroplating, blackening, painting, and zinc phosphating. This step concludes the manufacturing of metallic components for rifle scopes and other Meopta® products.

Optical Elements

Meopta® uses fluoride HD glass that is known for brilliant light transmission, minimized chromatic aberration, and exceptional color fidelity. The whole functionality of Meopta® products is reliant on optics, therefore it is necessary to allocate significant care to its design and manufacturing. Glass is different from metals in the sense that it cannot be formed or machined using conventional methods. At Meopta®, glass is cut using German-made grinding equipment that achieves desired shapes and sizes slowly and precisely. One such high-speed manufacturing technology employed at Meopta® is Synchrospeed.

While precise grinding does its job well, glass still retains surface roughness due to its brittle nature. One may think why such high requirements are necessary for the manufacturing of lenses. In order to achieve optimum values of reflection and refraction, highly smooth surfaces on lenses are a must. Meopta® houses Magneto-Rheological Finishing (MRF) equipment that is used to give required curvature and polished surfaces to lenses. For non-spherical glass elements, such as prisms, skilled operators employ contact profilometers of Taylor Hobson and Luphoscan brands.

Optical Coating

Now that all optical elements are designed and manufactured, the next step is optical coating. Contemporary multi-coatings are designed to serve more than one purpose, i.e. light transmission, anti-reflection, polarization, beam splitting, phase correction (prisms), and protection against surface abrasion and water contamination. As of 2020, Meopta® has 40 vacuum chambers for intricate multi-coatings on lenses and prisms.

Meopta® rifle scopes feature the following four optical coatings:

MEOLUX: The latest addition to Meopta’s proprietary coatings, MEOLUX, is designed to enhance light transmission of lenses by limiting undesired light reflections. The coating processes a light transmission of up to 95%, which is perfect for hunting during twilight and night-time hours. At present, only the MeoStar R2 series riflescopes feature the MEOLUX anti-reflective coating.

MEODROP: Water, grease, and dust are all the enemies of external lens surfaces. A little bit of whichever will ruin your experience of hunting on a fine excursion. MEODROP is a hydrophobic optical coating that is designed to prevent unwanted elements from clinging to the surface of lenses and ensure clear and unblemished images by turning the impurities into beads and rolling them off the surface.

MEOBRIGHT: MEOBRIGHT is another optical coating that is designed to improve the inherent light transmission rate of lenses. Promising up to 99.7% light transmission, MEOBRIGHT is perfect for hunting in low-light conditions. Optical elements of MeoPro Optika6, MeoStar R1, MeoPro, and ZD series rifle scopes feature this coating.

MEOSHIELD: MEOSHIELD is an anti-abrasion ion technology featuring a Silicon coating that is designed to protect the external lens surfaces from abrasion and scratches in the most demanding situations.

Assembly stage

As the name suggests, this stage deals with the assembly of mechanical and optical components to form the complete assembly of rifle scopes and other products that Meopta® offers. Components are brought in batches to assembly workstations where a competent workforce of 300 personnel assembles them together using adhesives or fasters. Assembly operations are either carried out in a cleanroom environment or a dedicated assembly hall depending on the requirements:

All4shooters.com

Cleanroom assembly

A cleanroom is an atmosphere-controlled room that is designed in a way to prevent unwanted particles, such as dust, dirt, or human hair, from contaminating the inner atmosphere. The cleanroom at Meopta® is built in a manner to fulfill the requirements of ISO standard 14644-1 class 3-6 and ISO standard 14644-8 class 9 for clean environments. Additionally, a particle counter monitors the cleanliness of the inside atmosphere and signals detected impurities above a threshold value. All components are properly cleaned before they are brought inside the room. At Meopta®, the cleanroom area is primarily employed for integrating electronics components, such as PCBs.

Standard assembly process

The assembly operations for rifle scopes are performed at the standard assembly area. The assembly of optical devices also requires a clean environment that is free of dirt, pollen grains, moisture, and dead skin cells. Why? Because only a minuscule amount of contamination on the surface of a lens can potentially affect the optical performance, particularly in the airtight optical cavity of rifle scopes. Imagine trying to remove an unwanted particle from the internal surface of the objective lens.

To fulfill the requirements of rifle scope assembly, the standard assembly area at Meopta® has several flow-boxes that are fitted with HEPA filters that promise a purity of ISO 1000 class. A few operations that are carried out at these miniature cleanrooms are:

  • Nitrogen-purging
  • Assembly of rifle scopes
  • Hydrophobic coating of lenses
  • Resolution and Interferometric measurement

Quality Control and Inspection

All components are checked for non-conformances beginning at the very start of manufacturing, which is cutting block sizes. Following this, all steps from glass grinding, turning, milling, optical coating, and metal surface coating are immediately followed by an inspection for quality. Non-conforming parts, if found, are either sent for rectification or scrapped. The final stage of rifle scope manufacturing at Meopta® is the inspection of the newly-built scope for various parameters, such as focus, windage/elevation adjustment, Nitrogen-leakage, shock vibration testing, and others.

Manufacturing of components in Asia

While most of the Meopta® products are manufactured in-house in Prerov, Czech Republic, the production of an affordable line of rifle scopes and binoculars is outsourced to the Philippines where the production and labor costs are considerably lower. Individual components are then sent to the Prerov factory where the final assembly takes place along with other premium products. While labor and production costs in the Czech Republic itself are lower compared to Europe, it is still comparatively lower than in Asian countries, particularly Vietnam and the Philippines.
