Talley Shot Show 2019 (40mm mount, Picatinny rails with a bubble level)

Introduction

Talley is a US manufacturer of mounts that has been in business for more than 40 years. They are known for adapting their mounts to the contemporary trends, which is why I was eager to visit their booth at Shot Show 2019 in Las Vegas, where I was shown their two new designs.

New products

The first one is a one-piece, detachable 40mm mount. Last year, Swarovski made a huge impact on the rifle mount industry when they presented their dS riflescope with a 40mm tube. Some riflescopes with that tube diameter were available before, but it was after the launch of dS that all major mount manufacturing companies started making their own version of 40mm ring mounts. At Swarovski’s booth at Shot Show, dS was exhibited with the Talley 40mm mount, and I have to admit that the combination looked really nice. The mount is well-made and seems robust enough to handle even the strongest calibers. The expected retail price is 280 $ in the US market.

The second innovation is a Picatinny rail with a slot for a bubble level. This is clever, and I haven’t seen anything similar on the market yet. When making the shot, having the firearm leveled vertically is extremely important as tilting it to the sides has an effect on where the bullet lands. Having a bubble level on the rail will diminish potential errors caused by shooting with a canted rifle. The slot for a bubble level is located at the rear of the rail, making it clearly visible to the shooter. The rails will be available for multiple rifles and will presumably cost 15–20 $ more than their standard rails, which is around 85 $.

Conclusion

It was a pleasure to see Talley modernizing their products. Bubble level was up to now an accessory limited to the mounting on riflescopes. By adding it to the Picatinny rail, Talley has started a new trend – they are definitely not the last ones using this design.
