Dovetail designs allow for the installation of mounts without the need for screws, as the mounts clamp onto the rail securely enough to withstand recoil. Many 3/8” dovetails also incorporate a recoil lug, providing additional resistance against the recoil, a feature particularly valuable in centerfire rifles. Some rifles equipped with a 3/8” dovetail also have holes drilled into the receiver. This allows users to choose between using the dovetail or directly attaching mounts through these holes.
