Pulsar Accolade LRF XP50 VS Pulsar Accolade 2 LRF XP50 | Optics Trade Debates

Welcome to another Optics Trade Debate. Today, we are going to talk about the differences between the Accolate second and first-generation XP50 laser range-finding models.

To begin with the history; it all started around 2 years ago, in 2018, at IWA. Their first Thermal Imaging Binoculars were launched there – the Accolade Generation 1. At first, there were two models: the XQ38, and the XP50. Later that year, the laser range-finding models were added to the collection: the XQ38 and XP50 LRF, both laser range-finding versions.

Now, two years have passed and Pulsar has a habit of frequently upgrading their products, so here they are, the second generation models. What are the differences that the second generation brings? If we compare the two, there is only one difference – the sensor. People might think that such a minor difference is silly but in reality, it is not.

The new sensor is much better than the old one. There is a noticeably better noise equivalent temperature difference parameter than the first one. This means that the first generation model needed at least 60 millikelvins of difference in temperature between two objects in order to distinguish between them. In contrast, the second generation needs only 40 millikelvins.

This results in observing much finer details, as well as more of them. This is helpful especially in harsh conditions, such as rain or fog. There is practically no other difference – the housing stayed completely the same, as well as the features. Also, the model still needs the standard IPS battery pack. There are no other differences apart from the improved sensor and image quality.

Every new product that Pulsar introduces is usually more affordable than the previous one. The first generation was priced a little below €5200, while the second generation is priced a little below €5000 – there is about €200 of difference in price. The newer model is cheaper, which means more trouble for their competition.
