Launched in 2025 at the IWA fair in Germany, the Quest line of thermal binoculars marks Nocpix’s debut in the binocular market. Currently available in three distinct models, each is equipped with an integrated laser rangefinder effective up to 1000 meters.
The entry-level Quest L35R features a 35 millimeter objective lens and a 384×288 sensor. With a base magnification of 5x, it’s tailored for extended range observation, albeit with less detail compared to its pricier counterparts. The higher-end models, the H35R and H50R, are fitted with a superior 640×512 sensor. The H35R, also sporting a 35 millimeter objective lens, is optimized for closer range viewing, thanks to its expansive field of view and a lower magnification of 3x. Conversely, the H50R is designed for distant observations, equipped with a 50 millimeter objective lens and a base magnification of 4x.
Pricing for these models is closely aligned with their monocular counterparts, starting at 2.199 € for the L35R, escalating to 2.599 € for the H35R, and peaking at approximately 3.199 € for the flagship H50R.
Physical Characteristics of Quest H50R
The entire casing of the Quest H50R is crafted from a very durable type of plastic, which is coated with a textured rubber for enhanced protection and grip. The use of plastic materials keeps the binoculars exceptionally light; for instance, this model, with a 50mm objective lens, weighs just 745 grams, making it remarkably lightweight. The device measures 160 millimeters in length with the eyecups folded and 175 millimeters when they are extended. It has a width of 138 millimeters and a height of 66 millimeters.
The eyepieces are covered with rubber, ensuring that no external light interferes with the display and maintaining invisibility during both day and night for superior image clarity. Each eyepiece’s diopter adjustment is rubberized for a firm grip and can be configured separately.
Although Nocpix does not specify the interpupillary distance, our measurements indicate it ranges from approximately 64mm to 74mm. At the center, there is a proximity sensor that detects whether the binoculars are in use, turning off the display to conserve battery life when not active. This sensor can be toggled on or off through the device menu, allowing for manual control over the display.
A strap hook is located on the side, while the battery compartment occupies the bottom. On the right side, the binoculars feature textured plastic, and on the left side, there is a USB-C port that allows for connection to external devices or charging of the batteries.
This device is fortified with an IP67 rating, ensuring it is completely dustproof and waterproof, capable of withstanding submersion up to one meter for a minimum of thirty minutes without damage. It operates effectively within a temperature range of -20 degrees Celsius to +50 degrees Celsius. The startup time is swift, approximately eight seconds. As a product of Infiray, the Nocpix binoculars are manufactured in China under stringent quality controls. Each purchase comes with a three-year warranty, and, based on our experience, the European-based repair facility offers prompt and reliable service, ensuring quick fixes whenever issues arise.
Operational Controls and Features
Atop the device are four buttons that control its operation, crafted from durable hard rubber that provides a satisfying tactile experience. A distinctive feature of this model includes two central rotating knobs; the foremost knob adjusts the focus, uniquely placed compared to traditional designs found in other brands, adding a unique aspect to the device. The rear knob controls digital magnification, enhancing its utility.
The use and handling of these binoculars are exceptionally comfortable, closely mirroring the familiar feel of traditional optical binoculars. Positioned at the front are two lenses: the right barrel houses the thermal sensor, and the left, the laser rangefinder.
Battery and Power Management
Embedded within the device is a robust 4200 mAh integrated battery. Additionally, it accommodates an interchangeable battery, specifically the 18650 type, known for its affordability and widespread availability in the aftermarket. The package comes with two of these batteries. Accessing the battery compartment is straightforward: simply lift and rotate the small lever by 90 degrees, which can easily be managed even in complete darkness.
As mentioned, included with the device are two interchangeable batteries, each with a capacity of 3850 mAh. When fully charged, these batteries provide approximately six hours of runtime at an ambient temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. Both the integrated and the interchangeable batteries can be conveniently charged via the device itself.
The device also supports external power sources through its USB-C port, allowing the use of an external power bank when necessary. While a charging station and cable are provided, it is regrettable that a charging adapter is not included, requiring a separate purchase.
On the device’s display, located in the upper right corner, is a power indicator that shows the charge level of each battery separately. This feature allows users to monitor battery status in real time during use, ensuring they are always aware of when power levels are low.
Sensor and Image Quality
The device features an uncooled VOx sensor with a 640×512 resolution and a pixel pitch of 12 micrometers. It refreshes images at 60 Hz, which is 10 Hz faster than many other models. This increased refresh rate results in smoother image, which is especially apparent when watching moving animals, as it enhances even the smallest details.
Another standout feature is the exceptionally low NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) of less than 15 mK, currently one of the best values available on the market.
The objective lens of the device measures 50 millimeters with an aperture of 1.1. The detection range extends up to 2600 meters, and users can choose between automatic or manual calibration modes. While the base magnification is 4x, the binoculars also offer an 8x digital zoom, substantial for digital thermal optics, pushing the maximum magnification to 32x.
The clarity of the image remains impressive even at 32x magnification, thanks to an effective image enhancement algorithm. This feature proves especially useful for larger magnifications. The field of view spans 15 meters in width and 12 meters in height from 100 meters distance.
The minimum focusing distance we observed was approximately 2 meters, facilitating close-up observation with ease.
We were thoroughly impressed by the image quality of this device, particularly how the low NETD value significantly enhances visibility. This feature allows you to spot subtle temperature variations with ease, and the magnification quality is exceptionally well-engineered.
The device boasts a 0.72-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. It includes a handy standby mode that can be activated via a button or the proximity sensor to turn off the display, saving power while still providing a large, clear view for easy observation.
You have the capability to take photos and record videos as the device comes equipped with 64 GB of internal storage. Additionally, the microphone can be toggled on or off depending on your needs. The device offers connectivity options to external devices like mobile phones, laptops, or tablets through the Nocpix app, which is also used for device updates and can serve as an external display. For external connectivity, you can enable Wi-Fi or use a USB-C cable for a direct connection.
Laser Rangefinder
The laser rangefinder can measure distances up to 1000 meters. The shortest distance it can measure is 2 meters. Its measurement accuracy is within +/- 1 meter. The response time of the laser rangefinder is impressively quick. From the moment the start button is pressed, it takes about 2 seconds to obtain a measurement.
Included Accessories
Included with your purchase is an attractive carrying bag secured with a robust magnet, ensuring the device is well-protected inside. Alongside, there’s a cleaning cloth provided for maintenance. You’ll also find carrying straps for the bag itself for easier transport. Additionally, the package includes two extra batteries, a charging cable, and a versatile charging station that is capable of charging various types of batteries, not just the ones supplied with the device. Finally, there is also a separate carrying strap specifically for the device, enhancing its portability.
Positives
The image quality is excellent, particularly due to the low NETD value, which significantly enhances thermal detection. Furthermore, the image remains exceptionally clear even at high magnifications, thanks to an effective image-enhancing algorithm within the device.
The build quality is also impressive. Despite being made from plastic, the device feels sturdy and durable while remaining lightweight, which speaks well of the material choice for the body.
The design and placement of the operational controls, including the buttons and both the focusing and magnification wheels, are thoughtfully executed. Ergonomically, the binoculars mimic the feel and ease of use of traditional binoculars, and they are remarkably light at just 745 grams.
Price-wise, at 3.200 Euros for the top model in this line, it competes well, mirroring the cost of their high-end monoculars.
Room for Improvement
The battery life, however, is a concern; with fully charged batteries, the device only lasts six hours. Ideally, this could be extended.
Additionally, the absence of a charger in the package is a notable oversight. Given the price point, including a charging adapter would be a sensible addition, avoiding the necessity for customers to make a separate purchase.
