EAW Fokus HD 50 Thermal device

EAW, a reputable German firm, boasts a longstanding history of creating mounts within the sports optics sector, known for their superior quality and numerous innovations over the years. Our solid partnership with them, coupled with their esteemed reputation, ensures our annual visit to their booth at IWA. The 2024 event presented a delightful surprise: they showcased a new thermal device, the Fokus HD 50. Venturing into thermal technology is a fresh direction for EAW, and their move into this territory was unexpected. We admit that we were pleasantly surprised by the impressive performance of their device. With many companies trying to grab a share of the thermal market, there are many repetitive products out there, but this is not the case with the Fokus HD 50 – read on to find out more.

A three-in-one design

One of the unique selling points of the new Fokus HD 50 is its versatility; it can be used either as a handheld monocular, a clip-on, or a scope. This adaptability allows it to serve various markets and meet the needs of diverse hunting situations.

The concept behind this device is founded on the durability and dependability of EAW’s mounts. Constructed from the resilient 7075 aluminum alloy and further reinforced with a rubber armor coating, it ensures extra protection and offers a comfortable grip. The model that we observed at EAW’s booth at IWA featured an integrated laser rangefinder system on the left side; its distinctive cylindrical shape contributes to the device’s unique construction. Fokus HD 50 will also be available for purchase without the laser. Should you decide to add it later, you have the option to buy the laser and install it yourself, eliminating the need to send it back to the factory. Fokus HD 50 is 100% waterproof. The threading at the rear adheres to the M43x0.75 standard, identical to that used on Night Pearl Seer and Liemke Luchs devices.

Optical properties

The sensor of the device has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with a 12-micron pixel pitch. The NETD value is <30 mK, providing a great differentiation of small temperature differences, which is especially useful in rain and fog. The lens measures 50mm in diameter. The laser is capable of measuring distances up to 1200 m.

Battery

The battery is built-in, which might be seen as a disadvantage given the thermal industry’s shift towards removable batteries. On the bright side, it provides up to 8 hours of operation on a single charge. If this isn’t enough, carrying a portable charger becomes essential.

Availability and pricing

Production is already underway, indicating that these devices will soon hit the market. This marks EAW’s initial foray into the thermal imaging sector. At their booth, I discovered their intention to broaden their range in the coming years. Their long-term objective is developing devices equipped with superior sensors, while the near-term goal includes the introduction of cost-effective thermal monoculars.

The EAW Fokus HD 50, equipped with a laser rangefinder, is priced at 3950 €, while its version without the laser is available for 3650 €. The product is manufactured in Germany, which is also the location for any necessary servicing. For European hunters, the advantage of not needing to send the product outside the EU for service is a significant benefit.
