The History of Pfeifer

Pfeifer Waffen is an Austrian family business established in 1978 by Klaus Pfeifer and was initially known as Montfort Waffen. Over the years, Pfeifer Waffen has gained a sterling reputation in the hunting industry for producing high-quality firearms.

Among their achievements, they are best known for the development of the world's biggest and most powerful revolver which is chambered for .600 Nitro Express Caliber. Alongside their SR2 and SR3 series of rifles, which are among the shortest hunting rifles on the planet, they also specialize in fulfilling custom requests from their customers.

They have a shooting range near their shop that clients can rent for target practice. In addition to their firearms, they also offer a variety of hunting accessories, riflescopes, binoculars, ammunition and more. In 2003, Klaus’ son Christian took over and as of 2023, he still manages the company.

Pfeifer SR2 Rifle Review

Pfeifer SR2 is a single-shot rifle manufactured in Austria, and recognizable for its compact and short design. It has a 660 mm long barrel, with an overall length measuring only 700 mm which allows for ergonomic design. Loading is done in an unusual way through the buttpad, which requires the user to open it via a vertically positioned release lever.

After opening, the cartridge finds its place in the uppermost slot used for loading the firearm, while two lower slots can hold spare cartridges. The rear end is closed and held in place by a pivoting lever which locks the assembly safely in place. Cocking the weapon also involves a unique procedure: it is done by pushing a reversed trigger-like lever forward – in a similar fashion, some German-style set triggers work, only that this cocks the rifle. When pushing the 'trigger' away from you, the rifle is cocked and then ready to fire. The firing trigger is instead a small button located on the rear end of the trigger guard, enabling a pull weight ranging from 300-1500 g.

The barrels come with drilled and tapped holes that can accept the mounting bases. The rifle can be locked with a key for additional safety, although this is an optional feature that can be added to the firearm if requested. The rifle does look a bit like Beretta’s CX4 Storm model; however, despite the visual resemblance, the SR2 differs significantly in mechanics.

Additional features on the rifle include a rubber recoil pad at the stock end as well as pre-installed sling swivels. The caliber choice primarily depends on the customers’ wishes, so the list of available cartridges is not fixed. Pfeifer also offers a lighter variant of the firearm – the model SR3 with a barrel reduced in length and thickness. Notwithstanding their unusual looks and short design, the rifles from the SR2 series are renowned to be extremely accurate and reliable.

Pfeifer SR2 Calibers

The rifle is offered in a variety of hunting calibers, ranging from .22LR to .458 Win. Mag. The caliber choice is completely left to the users’ preferences.

Since Pfeifer SR2 models do not come with a classic-style receiver, the barrels have two drilled and tapped holes that can accept mounting bases.

To meet interchangeability conditions, two-piece mounts must match in all dimensions except the B distance. B distance can vary because two-piece mounts can be installed and adjusted closer or further apart.
